My asshole X-country coach made us watch this before every season, and then played the song before every practice. Because I went to a small high school, our band got in on the act and learned the song, and played it before every meet. And because I was on the X-country team as well as in the band (I was a hyper-dork) I had to play 1st chair trumpet for "Chariots of Fire" and then run in the race. When I broke my back on a training run, I had that song, unfortunately, in my head, and so I ran back to campus thinking "winners don't walk."

I still say my coach was an asshole, because of what happened to my body after that as a result of her training. But she was damn motivational, and I love the song to this day. Her techniques, and how I interpreted them hurt, but they also ultimately saved my life: A few years later, I suffered from a brain tumor which almost killed me, taught myself to walk in 3 days despite a prognosis of 2 weeks in rehab learning that exact same talent, and then returned to my job in the education profession merely a month after surgery (despite still being in "critical condition" for another two months after that).

Focus: Everyone has their stories of overcoming the odds, no matter how big or how small. We are not ones to judge the importance of it -- you are. Sometimes it's a matter of defeating social boundaries, sometimes socio-economic boundaries. Sometimes, you beat an actual physical boundary. It's your story to tell, and we aren't ones to judge.

    Just tell it.

Alt Focus: Read the title, pleb.

I managed to overcome my inherent idiocy and retardation to become a lawyer.

Maybe that's not a good example...

    Re: Your Hurdle

Every single one of my coworkers have an MBA from a top-10 school, if not Ivy League. I have a bachelors from a mid-range state school. I fell backwards into this job by happening to have the exact skillset they needed when I was looking for a new job. It's also known that I don't have the on paper credentials and I've heard snickers about it before, so I still deal with bullshit from it.

    Edit: SKILLSET, d-bags.

Figured it had to be cast iron, cause not everyone has one.

    Re: Your Hurdle

I am extremely conflict-avoidant. To this day it is my major achilles heel, though I am getting better with maturity and an increasing level of not-give-a-fuck.

One of the hardest things I ever did was get a divorce. My ex-husband was notorious for flattening me emotionally with his temper on the rare occasions that it was directed at me. I was never worried about it turning to violence, just the conflict itself terrified me. That was the worst time in my life, and that includes some of the crappiest parts when I was a kid and my parents were alcoholics that fought all the time (hey kids, can you spot the correlations?).

One of the ironic things about it is that one of his frequent insults to me afterward was to call me a coward - because I left God and broke up our family. In reality, I had been the coward when I was staying in the relationship and pretending to still believe in God, in order to avoid the whole divorce thing.

Ditto. I work in the science and engineering field, and nearly all of my coworkers come from larger, well known schools (MIT, Notredame, Penn State), and many have PhDs and/or PEs (Professional Engineering license). I went to a school none of you have ever heard of and have a biology degree, yet I have a position on par with anyone else here, and make just as much money. I'm not sure I ever thought of this as a hurdle so much as something to be proud of, although the difference is subtle.

My biggest hurdle was my self-confidence, or lack thereof. Most of my problem was simply the fear of trying and failing. Once I finally said to myself "Screw it, let's take a shot", my life became much easier in many ways. This was true with women, with athletics, and to some extent with taking on more responsibility at work early in my career.
