I am apparently not allowed to give you any more greens, but I think we can all boil this argument down to that one statement.

 

The actual legal ramifications of this are sometimes the least of Corporate America's concerns, which is what I'm primarily alluding to. Bad press is the worst lawsuit a good brand can lose.

 

Of course not. My response was to the bolded sentence. Everyone obviously wants to teach their children that one shouldn't think less (or more) of anyone because of his or her personal characteristics. But at the same time, we shouldn't fool ourselves, or our children, into thinking that this is the way of the world.

If it were to come out that someone was fired/not hired because they were gay and that company had any sort of online presence at all, that company would be over. In regards to the focus, the same would not be true if it got out that someone was not hired/was fired because they were white.

 

I actually wanted to write about an underrated area of affirmative action as part of my senior thesis. I'd done literally hundreds of hours of painstaking research, had huge wads of proof that there was a clear bias, and had a clear, concise solution to what I thought was a pretty big issue.

But no, "WHERE IS ALL THE ASIAN DICK BLACK CHICK PORN" is apparently not "up to their academic standards."

Why in the living fuck not?

Progress in previous centuries was slow, because it took time to pass down attitudes, to spread tolerance. It took generations of slow, not always guaranteed progress.

This is no longer the case. We don't even have to wait for our kids to wake up to make a significant impact on the world around us anymore, we should raise them right as well.

In the world of instant communication, and (mostly) anonymity online, I would think it would be especially easy to teach children that there are no differences between people.

Fuck, even simpler (though fanciful), never let them believe there are differences in the first place...

 

That's pretty cool that you put your money where your mouth is. As opposed to some people who say one thing while their actions say another.

That being said, especially with Mismeasurement of Man recently following its author to the grave, I think we need to be open to the possibility of average intelligence not being identical across population groups. For example, Jews may have higher average intelligence than Europeans due to their historical niche in Europe as financiers and traders (with successful Jewish financiers and traders outbreeding unsuccessful ones), as described in Cochran and Harpending's 10,000 Year Explosion. Even slim differences in averages can create greater disparities at the bell-curves. There is no reason to assume a Tylorean "psychic unity of mankind."

I'm not going to touch racial differences in IQ here beyond saying that we need to keep the possibility open; however, family formation, I believe, is lower hanging fruit when it comes to evidence suggesting population differences. Historical and prehistorical reproductive strategies between West Africans, Europeans, and East Asians have not been identical. West Africans have been more polygynous than Europeans, who have subsequently been more polygynous than East Asians (<a class="postlink" href="http://www.cell.com/AJHG/abstract/S0002-9297(10" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.cell.com/AJHG/abstract/S0002-9297(10</a>)00033-9). Higher polygyny across the animal kingdom is strongly associated with lower paternal investment. Twinning rates and gestation periods also appear to follow the West African, European, and East Asian order from highest to lowest and shortest to longest, which could then play into r/K theory of reproductive strategy.

How does this factor into policy-making? Should it? I don't have the answer to either of those questions. I just think promoting an honest and frank dialogue with all the cards on the table is the first step to getting over being a "nation of cowards" about race.

What I definitely don't think is that biology trumps all and that anyone should "give up" on anything, so to speak, over potential racial differences. Nor should we completely turn a deaf eye to the possibilities of discrimination in certain spheres. Teaching your kids to treat individuals, as well, individuals is a null hypothesis I support.

Disclaimer: Averages are, of course, averages. It doesn't mean all members of one group are more so one way or another than all the members of another group. We all know a myriad of people who break a multitude of stereotypes one way or another. I shouldn't need to issue this disclaimer, but I've found that even very smart people can't wrap their head around the concept of averages.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was saying yes, by all means do this, but at the end of the day it's a drop in the bucket.

Because you only raise your kids. You don't raise the other billlion. Or determine the structure of institutions or social norms. They are born into a world that is (mostly) beyond their (and your) determination. And many of these people, institutions, and norms will be tinged with racism.

You teach your children to treat everyone equally, but don't expect this to change the world. Obviously I (like you) plan on trying to raise any children I may have not to be racist. But I don't have an expectation that the rest of the world will behave similarly.

 

I can't believe I have to make this cliche fucking statement, but many drops in the bucket eventually equal the bucket.

The fact that many are wrong won't keep me from being right.

 

There are debatable reasons to agree or disagree with affirmative action policies, but the idea that they in any way disadvantage white people is not one of them. If you're a white American and you think minorities as a demographic have had anything to do with why your life hasn't turned out the way you imagined it would, you're absolutely delusional.

I'm not saying anyone here necessarily feels that way, but there is a distinct bitterness to some of these replies. Just saying.

 

Affirmative Action dirties the pool of candidates in any Field. College, Corporations, Government, etc...

The fact that different standards exist for any reason for a certain group of people cause people to think that the only reason that group of people are there are because of the lower standards. Even if it ultimately leads to no hires, the fact that it exists and could have been used (which you'll never know) casts a pale shadow on all people of that group.

And that sucks for anyone who is qualified and competent.

And racism exists far and wide. I'll prove it:

I'm a 45 minute drive from the Bluewater bridge, the Can/Am crossing at Sarnia/Port Huron. I have crossed this bridge both ways at LEAST 100 times each throughout my life, not including Windor's AMbassador crossing. Never, not even ONCE, have I been asked to "pull over" by customs so they could search our vehicle. Whether I was with friends, family, my wife, or myself. Never. The ONE TIME I crossed with a couple of black buddies, the USA customs raped my car and cross-referenced all of our passports, taking almost 2 hours. They were NOT nice nor polite, treated us like shit. Not me, just my black friends.

Of course, THEY thought it was hysterical, jokingly taunting me in the office: "Can we get you more coffee while we cavity-search your friends again for Black Guy Stuff, Mr. Snowflake?"

Fucking hilarious. I love people who can laugh bullshit like that off.
