Meet went great. Set my openers too low which came back to bite me in the ass, but overall a decent experience and now I know better for next time. 445 squat, 315 bench and 480 deadlift. Here's a couple videos.
I was in the 242 class (weighed in at 233). 1st in my age division, 3rd overall in the class. Like I said, I set my openers too low. Next time I'm hitting the 500 dead.
Progress. I got here at the end of May, at 264. I'm at 217 now. I've been running 5 miles Monday, Wednesday, Friday, doing light lifting and running 3 miles on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Start the morning with vitamins and whey protein, snack on high protein snacks and nuts throughout the day, and eat decent meals for dinner. I'm treating food as fuel rather than pleasure while I'm out here.
Back to the grind. 5x10 squats @ 255. SLDLs, then ab work. Nice and easy, although volume work can kiss my ass.
I searched the thread but didn't see any answers... Are there any good supplements for the 40+ crowd? My metabolism finally slowed down, so I'm going to have to stop eating anything and everything, and was looking for good supplements for weight training.
Any bodyweight fanatics here? I can't get a muscle up to save my life and I know I should be strong enough to do them. I can do ten+ clapping pull ups, 10+ towel gripped pull ups, and probably around 15-20 regular ones if Im fresh. I can also do a pretty good amount of dips. I can't get the transition above the bar. Could it be a core issue? I will lift and run for days, but I despise anything involved with abs. I wouldn't say I have a weak core, I just don't put time aside to do it besides what comes with lifting. Or maybe I just suck at kipping up, I just don't know. Anyone who can do them have any advice? Is there a certain grip distance your hands should be at?
Are you using a bar or rings? Either way, you've got to kip up high enough (unless you're strong enough to do it strict) to get your sternum even with your hands. Then you headbutt through it like a drunken irishman and get your CoG over the bar/between the rings. Up you go. Khalipa explains it fairly well, here. On rings. On a bar, you can use bands to assist so you can feel how far you have to throw yourself upward to get the bar muscleup.
Awesome, thanks. That's actually a pretty good video. I use a bar, but I can see how some of it will still apply. I'm going to have to try that grip he explains in the video, I think that might get me over the hump.
What's the aversion to "steroids?" Trt is steroids and that's what you need. The supplement industry is a giant lie. You need good old vitamin T.
There's something to getting your T levels checked. Even if you're on the lower end of normal, having some kind of TRT will benefit you immensely.
Also get Vitamin D levels checked, if they're low get more sun (ideal) or supplement with it. It's not proven to increase testosterone, but there's some pretty convincing correlation. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21154195 Might be some bias in that study since they didn't post the results of the placebo group, only saying "By contrast, there was no significant change in any testosterone measure in the placebo group." But anecdotally a lot of people have seen big boosts in testosterone from supplementing with Vitamin D.
I wanted to share this because Holy Shitsnacks my girl is strong. She's got a powerlifting comp in a couple of weeks, and though she may not win, she's likely going to place. I can't be happier for her. That's 245 for 20 reps. Two days later she hit 250 for 20. Yeeez.
That's legit. There's nothing like the feeling you get after a set of 20-reppers. You feel like an absolute fucking puddle, yet you feel fucking invincible at the same time. It's pretty rad.
Her squat is up from 305 at the beginning of August to be AT LEAST 335. I'm so happy for her. She's working her ass off. I die after my 150 lbs. Hell. My last one rep was 225.
Damn, that's impressive. You said she was going to be competing in a meet soon; how do weight classes work for women and which class is she in?
she's the 181 weight class. According to this her numbers are competitive. She's the 181 Intermediate Unequipped. She's got a 335 squat, 160+/- bench, and a 340+/- deadlift. But I just read another link that showed the record as a 360 squat...if THAT is correct and it's for raw, she won't hit it, but if the first link (the one I provided) is correct, that's pretty bad ass. Edit: Just looked, that was equipped. If I suited my girl, she'd squat over 400. She's a machine. I have a hard time even getting her to drink protein shakes or recovery or anything. She's just...naturally...strong.
This is just silly... These look like fun until I would inevitably dislocate my shoulder or smash my face...
