Im heading down to Florida in a few weeks and have some general question on what type of rods and reels. The sheer number of brands and models is a little overwhelming and wondered what you guys recommend.

Im looking to set up two rods both spin casters and about 200$ for each. One shorter 6-7' bait fishing setup. Something with 20lbs test for smaller medium fish before a sand bar or bay fishing. Really like to try out jigging with this.

Second would be a longer 10-12' set up with 40-50lb test line. This would be for distance casting beyond the sand bar for bigger fish.

    Thanks for any advice!

So I was in the Sea of Cortez all week and this happened. 105 pound grouper that ate a 20 pound bonito used for bait. I will post a report later this week but I am headed to Cabo to tuna fish for a few day.0510

Tuna fishing was a little slow in Cabo, the first day we caught 7 smaller ones not the 150 pounders we were looking for, the next 2 days were dry, but Wednesday after we got back from our 80 mile boat ride we went out on a skiff to do some inshore stuff and I managed to hang these 2 guys, snap a photo and let them swim. The first one is a Pez Gallo or Rooster fish, about 40 pounds, the second is a Jack Crevalle that is probably 25 pounds, these were both on my bucket list of fish to catch so nice way to end the trip.

I kept the shell that killed the bird and used the brass head to cap off the beard. The spurs look nice with it too. Used a gnarly old piece of scrap walnut for the front wood plate, finished with a quick lacquer job.

I am officially headed into the Boundary Waters again during the first week of October (we'll see if that fall fishing rush actually happens this year) and will hunt late season pheasants in South Dakota come December (YEEHAW!!!).

Now in less than a month I'll be trout and salmon fishing on Lake Superior for the first time, off Madeline Island with some buddies for a bachelor party. I have never fished on a really big lake before, nor have I been on a charter boat. What to expect? What's the usual tip amount?

I'm new to fly fishing, only been at it about a month. I've got a nice kit, had some great experiences but I'm having a few issues. My biggest problem is my flies seem to keep slipping off. I'm using a clinch knot, at least I think I am. Any tips on securing the knot at the fly?

I use the Orvis fly knot. You can find it here: http://howtoflyfish.orvis.com/fly-fishing-knots/

Also be sure to wet the line while doing it. Don't be shy about it as it helps to provide friction.

Thanks Net, that knot looks super simple and I trust that it'll hold better because of the second loop. I'll give that a go today. I going out car camping with a friend and I happened to chose a place thats nearby some amazing fishing.

Man, I love those animations. As a kid, I had two or three books on knots, and the drawings were the absolute worst. The step by step online makes it cake.

Thanks for the help with the knots. I went out today and didn't have an issue. I caught a nice little rainbow, about 7 inches, my first catch solo. Pretty exciting. I'm going back out to Clear Creek tomorrow and spending some real time navigating the stream. I'm trying to fish the front range as much as I can before I go.

You can see that the experienced guy sees what's happening and then pulls the other guy overboard with him... probably saved him some serious damage.

Charter boats can be fun, I usually tip like I would in a restaurant 15-20%. Be sure you know upfront what you are getting, a lot of times boats will charge to filet your fish, or throw in a fuel surcharge

Random question, I found a game camera on my property this afternoon, only about 10 yards from my camera. I took it, checked the card, the only picture is me walking upon it. Do I keep it? My land is marked Posted damn well.

I would keep it, and post a note in its place that reads something like: "I have your trail camera. If you want it back, you are welcome to come pick it up from me. Even though you were trespassing when you put it there, I don't mind giving it back to you. If you misunderstood where the Posted signs were, I will be happy to explain them when you call me at: (xxx) xxx-xxxx to get your camera back."

Or, leave the camera there, put a piece of black electrical tape over the lens, fill the SD card with porn, and put it back in the camera. The last .jpg file you cop on the card should be a note that reads: "Next time, trespassers will be shot. Keep your camera and yourself off my property."

I now have a stand ladder that someone didn't want to get after I posted a note where it used to be on the property. I let it sit 10 feet from the tree all winter and nobody came back to take it, though the same people (I suspect) were turkey hunting in the same spot the following spring. I posted a bunch of signs around the property shortly after that and I haven't seen any evidence of trespassers since. Not sure what I'd do in your situation since I don't have stuff out there they could steal too- regardless I don't think asking the DNR in your area first could hurt.

The stupid charter boat bailed on us like an asshole this weekend but fortunately someone in my buddy's bachelor party group brought his 18' boat and we managed to get a little time on the lake when it was calm enough. On Saturday we caught six fish in an hour- four lake trout, a brown trout, and a steelhead (or coho salmon?). The biggest lake trout and the brown trout were 22" and the steelhead was 26", and we kept those and threw the rest back for later. I caught lake trout in the Boundary Waters a couple years ago but this was my first time seeing a brown trout and steelhead so that was cool. They are delicious fish too, we ate half right away and I brought the rest home. On Sunday we caught nothing, and yesterday the weather was pretty good and we were able to be out long enough to catch more lake trout but none over 20" and all went back- still fun to reel them in. Trolling around in 150 feet of water is not my usual thing but it was a great time regardless.

I am feeling hell-bent on getting lake trout later this month in the Boundary Waters when I'll be back up there, can't wait.
