For me the worst movie of 2009 is Surrogates hands down. When I watched it, I just sat around for a few minutes wondering to myself, "What the hell did I just watch?" I still can't believe someone made that movie.

    (500) Days of Summer was an amazing, fresh take on the romantic comedy. I'm kinda stoked to see it on awards lists.

There are still many good films this year I haven't seen. (Like "District 9", "The Hurt Locker", "Zombie Land", even "Rocknrolla") And I generally avoid Pixar, so no "Up", although I might watch it at some point. Among those that I have, let's go with

    1. Crank 2 (Most purely entertaining film ever made; forget about story or meaning, this was simply a brilliant comedy)
    2. Revolutionary Road (Wide release in 2009, but limited in 2008...does that count? Anyways, PHENOMENAL story and acting)
    3. Inglorious Basterds (Way better than Pulp Fiction in terms of story and humor, albeit without as many memorable acting performances)
    4. Moon
    5. Serious Man (Not as funny/brilliant to me as "Burn after Reading", but excellent nonetheless)
    6. Red Cliff, Western version
    7. Adventureland (It's not often I really enjoy an indie/hipster type romantic comedy)
    8. I Hope they Serve Beer in Hell (I'll throw Tucker a bone; this film had some outstandingly hilarious moments)
    9. The Hangover

Those are the only nine films I would label as being solidly good ("Avatar" and "Ninja Assassin" don't quite make the cut, and both are surprisingly similar; they rely on action/visuals, and are equally stupid/horrendous from a story/character perspective)

    Worst films?

    3. Star Trek (This was fucking awful. No comedy, lousy cliched action, and the most laughable continuity errors, plot holes, and general nonsense I have ever seen. This was torture to sit through)

    2. Fast and Furious (One of the worst American action movies ever made, right up there with "American Ninja 3: Blood Hunt". I left an hour into it to get to Subway. And I don't even like Subway; I just figured that was a better use of my time)

    1. Street Fighter 2 (Of course I didn't see this shit in theaters. Still, I had fond memories of its awful, cheesy, 1994 Van Damme prequel as a kid. Easily one of the worst movies ever made)

Off the top of my head:

    1) The Hurt Locker
    2) Drag Me to Hell
    3) Up
    4) Moon
    5) Paranormal Activity
    6) Inglorious Basterds
    7) District 9
    8) The Hangover
    9) Zombieland
    10) IHTSBIH

Looking forward to seeing The White Ribbon next week, and still need to see a few others (Avatar, Coraline, Precious and Capitalism come to mind).

    In no real order:
    -Paranormal Activity
    -The Hangover
    -The Hurt Locker
    -Zombieland
    -Drag Me to Hell
    -Inglorious Basterds
    -Up

Worst movies? Transformers was awful and I got so sick of listening to people tell me how amazing it was. The Fast and the Furious was horrible, I saw it in theatres for free and it was still a waste of money. Funny People wasn't as bad as these two but before this I'd never left a movie thinking "wow, this could have been so much better," so it was a let down in its own way.

Zombieland was awesome from beginning to end.

The Bill Murray cameo made it one of my favorite comedies of all time.

Having just seen Avatar in 3D i have to say that one's gotta be in the top 5. So captivating, it makes you forget you're even on Earth. An epic fondue of the plots of Tarzan, Pocahontas, and The Smurfs.

I think these were the only movies I saw from 2009. Regardless, all awesome.

    -Coraline
    -The Hurt Locker
    -Up
    -Fantastic Mr. Fox
    -District 9
    -Star Trek
    -The Hangover

Also, come to think of it, was this not the best year for animated movies ever? Up was one of Pixar's best (beaten only by Ratatouille in my book). Coraline and The Fantastic Mr. Fox were both like no other movies I had seen before. I didn't see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, but I had a ton of friends that raved about it, and Ponyo and The Princess and the Frog both got great reviews (although I'll likely never see either). In other years, you'd be hard pressed to find two quality animated movies. Maybe it's because I have the taste of a 9 year old when it comes to this sort of thing, but God this was an awesome year for animated movies.

Didn't see a lot of new movies this year but the ones I saw were well done. Only Inglorious Bastards and Law Abiding Citizen really stood out though.

That's a pretty big statement I don't think you can back up, but let's hear it.

    Top 5
    1. Inglorious Basterds. Nearly perfect.
    2. District 9. My favorite Sci-Fi movie. I had no idea where it was going and thought the main character was going to die 10 minutes in.
    3. Up. Pixar is amazing. They actually topped Finding Nemo in "way sad intro".
    4. The Hangover. Really good solid comedy.
    5. Precious. Sad. Good story that was very well acted.

Zombieland, Avatar, IHTSBIH and Star Trek were entertaining, but not amazing.

Quite a few of mine have been mentioned, but no love for Sherlock Holmes, or All Saints Day?

I enjoyed the hell out of both of those movies.

    Echoing what a lot of people have already said, I really enjoyed;
    Crank 2
    Orphan
    Coraline
    Inglorious Bastards
    The Hangover
    Taken
And finally The Shawshank Redemption. Because Shawshank is always the best movie in any possible catagory. Ask me what the best Korean comedy from the year 2026 is, and I will tell you The Shawshank Redemption.

Still haven't seen IHTSBIH. I'm a bad Tucker Fan.

    4. Zombieland
    5. Star Trek
    6. The Hangover
    7. District 9

Those are my favorites so far, but there's a ton of movies I still need to see.

Biggest let down of the year: Avatar

Public Enemies was the worst movie I saw in 2009 because I had such high expectations for it. Incredible actors as well as an amazing story; and it turned out to be a total flop.

Whoever wrote the script modified the wikipedia story of John Dillinger and had them make a movie on it, absolutely awful.

I hate to be redundant but I thought Hanover and IB's were the two best films.

I think the storyline for Avatar was meh, but the 3D technology was groundbreaking. Unlike past 3D movies where now & then something pops out at the audience, this whole film was 3D and I hope Hollywood makes it a standard, at least for action movies.

    2. Watchmen
    3. Pirate Radio
    4. District 9
    5. Drag Me to Hell
    6. The Hangover
    7. Star Trek
    8. Inglorious Basterds
    9. Coraline 3D
    10. Paranormal Activity

But I really didn't see a whole lot of movies that came out this year. Less than 20. The others I saw were:

17 Again (Thank you, United Airlines...)
    2012
    A Christmas Carol 3D
    Avatar 3D
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell
    The Final Destination 3D
