In my junior year of college, I started probably the most elaborate lie of my life. It all started when I was having a slightly racist debate over the phrase "African American." Obviously, I was drunk. But in an attempt to win this argument, I told a black man that I was born in Africa, and am technically an African American.

Some people heard me tell this lie and for the next year I had to continuously try to convince people I was born in Africa. It got to the point where I had the country (Morocco), city (Casablanca), and hospital (Clinique Aftal) I was born in. It was also decided that I was in Morocco because my parents were in the Peace Corp.

The only person who knew I was lying was the roommate I lived with for two years. She didn't tell anyone for the whole two years we lived together. There was also the lesser "I'm a Gypsy" lie, but no one was as interested in that one.

 

Doesn't the saying go, "The bigger the lie, the more like someone will think it is not bullshit, because of the lie?"

 

Obligatory: well, this one time on a messageboard some truck driver claimed to be a sniper in Afghanistan...

Mostly I know inept liars, but a family member's boss constructed a totally fake company, and I'm not talking about a shell company that only exists on paper. This had buildings, expensive industrial equipment, office space, the whole works. He used it to invoice his primary employer for hundreds of thousands of dollars over a 3 year period. Apparently no-one noticed because the company turns over about $3 Billion dollars a year, and he was a very senior executive. Then, while he was away on a business trip, someone needed something in a hurry, couldn't reach the contact number for the company, and went for a site visit. The warehouse still existed, but it was totally empty, and there were no staff. The CEO was called in, then police, and the office computers were seized. This all happened maybe a month ago. Shockingly, the gentleman in question has extended his overseas trip and isn't answering questions.

The weirdest part about this to me is that as I understand it, the guy leeched about $500k-600k over 3 years. Sounds like quite a bit, until you consider that he was a senior exec making north of $200k / year. Now, he will (I assume) never work in his industry again, cutting off future earnings that vastly outstrip what he embezzled. It just seems incredibly shortsighted.

Oh, and an acquaintance of mine had a significant meth habit, the extent of which he kept from his wife. The wife knew he used occasionally, but not that it was an every day thing. He would come home after work, maybe 15-20 minutes later than traffic would account for, and force down a huge dinner with a smile on his face to convince her he was straight. They'd do couply things, then he'd go out for a 'quick beer' with friends. He'd be home by bedtime, and then lie next to her for 8 hours, pretending to sleep. Rinse and repeat for days on end. This guy moved out of the state a few years ago, but rumour has it nothing has changed. He manages to maintain his job as a reasonably senior school teacher.
