My friends are throwing me a house party for my birthday this weekend, and we need tunes. There should be about 50 people in a relatively small space, and we want a good mix of current hip-hop, danceable music, throwbacks from the 1996-2004 era (Nelly, Ja Rule etc) and electronic/house/dance. NO DUBSTEP.

    Throw your suggestions this way.

Eric Krasno (guitarist--Soulive) put out a really great mix tape that's always worked well at parties. It's a combination of everything from Jay Z to James Brown all melded together really well.

You can stream it first to check it out and then download it from here.

Ratatat & Girl Talk should have you covered, to be honest. Maybe some MSTRKRFT remixes.

    Otherwise, current hip hop:
    Childish Gambino - EP
    Frank Ocean - nostalgia, ULTRA.
Jay-Z & Kanye West - Watch the Throne
Wiz Khalifa - Kush & OJ
    Kendrick Lamar - Overly Dedicated & Section.80

    Dancier stuff:
    Justin Timberlake - FutureSex/LoveSounds
Daft Punk - Homework & Discovery
    M.I.A. - Kala & Piracy Funds Terrorism
    Outkast - Stankonia

    For a more throwback crowd:
Kanye West - The College Dropout & Late Registration
The Notorious B.I.G. - Ready to Die
    Nelly - Country Grammar
    Jay-Z - The Black Album
    Dr. Dre - 2001
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter II & III
    Sugar Ray - Floored

Uggh. No offense, but I'm getting tired of Girl Talk being the go to playlist for every party. The rest of your selections are awesome and many of the same have found its way onto mine, but Girl Talk just seems lazy to me.

Look into some of the remixes Aviici has put out recently. He just did a remix of Coldplay's new single thats just perfect party music. And to be honest, if you want girls to be pleased, toss on the new Guetta album. We did last weekend and people kept raving about the party soundtrack.

Yeah, I'm not a huge huge fan myself - I think most of his mixes are kind of mediocre. Girls seem to like it, though. I tried not to go too music snob with the list. A little more underground:

Kno does a great remix of Jay-Z's Black Album, called The White Albulum. There's also, of course, The Grey Album by Dangermouse.

Almost forgot Big Boi - Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty. Not technically an OutKast album, but just as good.

Also: Clipse - Hell Hath No Fury. You can't go wrong with the fucking Neptunes on the beats.
