I posted this in the Youtube thread and I can't stop watching it. It's so... good natured and nice. As is this: So, going against the grain of usual discussions: Focus: Post nice things. Things that restore a bit of faith in humanity or just temporarily alleviate your habitual cynicism.
We had a pretty good thread on awesome achievements of humanity recently, so hopefully this will also go well. Most great people have their flaws; it seems to be part of the price of being great sometimes. Our heroes are under more intense scrutiny than most of us, and pehaps rightly so. I have heard legitimate criticism of everyone from Albert Einstein to Mother Teresa. However, in all the years that people have had to find fault with Mister Rogers (and I am sure many have tried), he was apparently exactly what he appeared to be, in every way. Any adult who has been out in the real world would look at his show and go "Yeah, well, in the neighborhood of make-believe, you can be that nice. You can be that thoughtful. But you can't do it in the real world." Fred Rogers, from all reports, did exactly that. He was the best of us. I don't have too many heroes, and most of them have little asterisks after their names in my list for one reason or another. I keep Fred Rogers on my list with no asterisk at all.
I have a family member who is (well, was) good personal friends with him. When I was little we even went to the studio and sat on his lap and crap. By all accounts -- from what I remember and from what was personally told to me about him -- he really was that awesome. Though I no longer speak to that side of the family, and by association the family member who knew him personally, I trust the judgements.
I really love these two videos that came out a few years ago called "Where The Hell Is Matt?" The first one, from 2006, showed this one guy doing a silly little dance in places from all around the world, and it was so simple and joyful and I don't know how you can't smile while watching it. Sometimes, it helps to remember that the world is much bigger than your tiny little version of it, and is actually something huge and beautiful and wonderful and fascinating. Then he did another one in 2008 that focused more on having a group of people dance with him everywhere he went. I like this one even more. Maybe it's pushing it to get all cheesy and philosophical about what is essentially a Youtube viral video, but it's nice to see that even though the world is that huge place like he showed in the first video, it's easy to bring us all together through something like this stupid little dance, and we're not all that different after all. *Tear.* Whatever, I think they're great. I hadn't watched those in years. It was nice to see them again.
All credit to Kakotoch (or however its spelled) who was the original poster, but I find that this brightens my day pretty consistently: http://www.dailypuppy.com/
Anytime I'm overwhelmed by how much I hate myself, the world, and everything in it, I watch this video. Because it shows that a) puppies love you, and b) sometimes people get the happiness that they deserve. I think it is the sweetest thing in the world, and if you disagree, you can go to hell. Without puppies.
Wait! I want to post another thing that I remembered after the doggie post above. This is my favorite story ever: http://www.uniquescoop.com/2010/06/kitties-rescued-by-us-marine-soldiers.html Essentially: Marines taking care of kittens that they find. I cried.
I don't care if you're into pop music or not (I'm generally not), but the way DJ Earworm can weave 25 songs into one is fucking awesome (and coordinating it all into one video, well shit. Dude should win some kind of award): He's got a lot of really amazing mash-ups here: http://djearworm.com/
I could be having the worst day known to man, and all of a sudden I will crack a smile whenever I see this.
But I already know how to walk on two legs? Focus: I feel better about humanity knowing that there are people like this in the world: Also a couple more that are nice/cute/whatever and a little sad: White Wine in the Sun by Tim Minchin: kiwi!:
