I have been anxiously awaiting this show since I first stumbled across it's preview. If you combine the films Gladiator and 300, add in HBO's "Rome" you have Spartacus. The first episode was full of violent, gory battle scenes as well as plenty of gratuitous nudity. You can pretty much sum of the first episode with two words, blood and sex.

I will absolutely continue to watch the show but I think Starz tried to make it to edgy, to "over the top." Every fight scene had slow motion in it, this started to get a little tiresome (especially when it was a simple fistfight between Spartacus and his friend) but not enough to keep me from watching the series.

It has a great story, and so far has been very well acted. I'm curious to see what everyone else felt about the show. (and to see if anyone actually has Starz..?)

I agree with you that the first show had a little too much 300 feel without the money to do it well. But the second show is really good and they seem to have addressed all the concerns I had with the pilot so this looks like it's gonna be a favourite of mine.

I was going to watch it simple because I loved 300 like every other homo-sapien with testicles but it's still an obvious spin off and I will probably end up comparing it to 300.

Ok, I wasn't crazy about 300. But fucking Spartacus is about as badass as a show gets. You described it perfectly Mike. The story of Gladiator with the cinematography of 300. Rules.

I dug the first episode, though I do hope they tone down the excess slo-mo blood spatter. And my god, the titties!

By the way, Netflix carries Starz play in pretty much real time, on demand. So if you have an account I would just suggest watching it that way.

Who knew that the ancient Thracians all spoke with Australian accents?

Good show though. Yes it's highly derivative both in content and style, but that hardly detracts from the sheer awesomeness.
    Also Xena's titties. Bam.

So yeah, I didn't even notice she was in it until the credits rolled. Which character was her? She was naked??

Now I want to go back and rewatch the episode.

Glad someone posted their take on this (thank you). Had no idea the show existed until I saw a preview before The Book of Eli this weekend.

If you don't have Starz just get Graboid. Love that service.

If you checked out this show and were turned off by the low budget effects and their overuse in the first episode I'd recommend giving the second episode a chance.

Far less stop/slow motion montages, the scenery is still lower budget but there aren't scenes with horrible cgi crowds like in the arena scene from episode 1.

Also... tits galore. Nothing like wondering to yourself what an actress would look like naked/topless and then finding out a minute later. Every hot actress shown has geared down so far which more than makes up for the cheap cgi and rather bland fight scenes.

I am thoroughly loving this show, including it's over-the-top, cheesy CGI effects.

As always I looked it up on IMDB before I watch just so I know what I'm getting into. One of the descriptions was tits and blood. It didn't disappoint.

This show oozes sexuality and violence. Even when you know exactly what is going to happen (clearly Spartacus will not fail the test) you still enjoy it and want to see more. Great action and I'm happy they eased up on the bloody slow-mo's, they have some decent actors here!

For the 300 hundred fans I'm sure you all recognize the black trainer, at any second Spartacus might kick him in the chest and yell "This is Sparta!!!" and send him down a bottomless pit.

Lucy Lawless is great and Crixus well he is absolutely bad ass. No need for him to have any more full frontal nude scenes but I'm sure he will have an awesome gladiatorial debut.

I know it's all blood, tit's and violence, but who fuckin cares really? Eat your heart out Kirk Douglas there is a new Spartacus in town.

Damn you I have drill tomorrow, fuck it I gotta watch this. Big thank you.

They graphics got on my nerves during the first episode a little over the top but the story is solid I think. I am getting more into it with every episode I watch thanks again.

I think the show is getting better and better. It's funny how you can see Starz obvious attempt at getting new member's with the first episode, (a blood and tits marathon) no you see them developing a story.

Spartacus showing humility is a huge step you should see a huge change in his character now.

The truly interesting thing about this show is that it's a high quality lowest common denominator kind of show. It's 24 before it jumped the shark and with good acting and passable writing. I don't watch because of any particular literary standard the show achieves -- like Breaking Bad or Mad Men does. Instead, I watch because I know I'm going to be entertained for an hour, especially with the bizarre sexuality in the first three episodes. My favourite scene so far has been when Batiatus and Lucretia are just chatting about finances and are having their slaves warm up their genitals -- the last thing I ever expected to see on TV. If they took the show one set further and made it a full-on hardcore porno with a plot, I might never watch another show again.

I finally go around to watching the three episodes, that I have DVR'd, and I believe I have a new 2nd favorite. I don't think anything is going to bump Howe and Howe Tech, right now.

I really liked episode five, despite the lack of titties. I always thought that Batiatus was a bit of a pussy, but here he is brutal. Great fight scenes too.
