    If you don't post and have your first few posts authorized by a mod (all new accounts have their initial posts moderated), then your account will be considered auto-generated and meant for spam.

    Every day we will delete such accounts that are a day old, so be sure to make a post as soon as you sign up.



    EDIT: Post more than "I'm real" for your first post. The more on-topic and less vague you sound, the better your chances are that you're going to get your post approved.

    It's only the first couple of posts that are moderated... after that, you can post at will.

    Have been lurking for awhile. Used to post more on the old board and will try to be more engaging. I actually don't even remember what my old username on the TMMB was.

    does the new version help control spambots? i noticed that the "newest member" names are now all popping up as things like steebycef and mqmxodify and in the member list, there are bunch piling up that have 0 posts. is that something you have to delete manually, or do you have some kind of auto-delete after a couple days? what a pain.

    same as always... i'll get around to trying to implement something new, but for now i just wait until i see some obvious spam posts (that you don't see because we have the first few posts by members under moderation control, so they have to be approved before they're actually made public), and then i go in to some "user pruning" tools built into the site admin, and just do a "delete users with 0 posts".

    that's why it's important for people who make new accounts to make a post as quickly after that as possible, and get it approved, because if they don't, it'll get thrown out with the spambots.

    fyi, this is what mods see occasionally:



    that green circle with the question mark means it's a user's first post waiting to be allowed or denied.

    it seems that spambots create an account and then circle back a day or three later to post under that account, usually with shit like that.

    meanwhile, normal users are hidden from it.

    this is a typical list of users that i prune every couple of days:



    i'm planning on collecting some more info as to ip blocks they're registering from, etc., and then outright blocking certain ip ranges from accessing the site.

    you'd be surprised at how many of those accounts have ukraine based ip address.

    this may be off topic, so you can spin it off if it's worth answering. but, what the hell? so, a spammer joins a forum, and then the forum members click on their link, and then they buy shit? who does this work on? or, are they just trying to manipulate page views for reports so they can get ad revenue. i don't understand the "dearest beloved" emails, either.

    taking, not posting. well, unless you're brett favre.

    it's more about search engine optimization and fucking retards clicking your links.

    the more links you have all over the internet, the more highly ranked you may be with search engines (unless they go out of their way to penalize you for link-spamming, like google does), and the more likely it is that idiots will click on the link and go "oh, look... i can buy real louis vitton bags for pennies on the dollar!", and either go to a malware site that will highjack your computer, or to an online store, or something.

    or it can be used to help fuck over competitors by spamming their links so they get punished by search engines for spamming.

    who the fuck knows... it's just annoying.
