Google is your friend. Seriously. How could you have not figured this out in less time it took you to type in that post?

I tried googling aaf for a while which was fruitless. It seems like very few months there is a whole new slew of competing audio/visual formats that are released. Most of the time having to download patches for video players from super shady websites (at least thats how a computer retard like me handles it with google). This isnt my mac so I really don't want to be downloading a bunch of random applications. Keeping shit simple keeps me from having to hire computer people like you to clean up viruses and corrupted computers after I gottsa see the new Gianna porn. Ill probably wait for it to show up in a traditional format or just catch it streaming somewhere.

Basically, RAR is an archiving and compression format. Like ZIP, or Stuffit, or something else.

UnRarX will uncompress and assemble the multiple files into one final outcome (like a .avi or .aaf file).

The .aaf file format means it's of the Advanced Authoring Format, and is a very obscure format for use in a typical torrent or file download. It's usually an intermediate format that a work in progress is stored as while it is being authored. (At least in my limited experience with it).

Typically, it would be exported to an AVI or MP4 or other more typical file format for general dissemination.

Not a Mac OS problem, but a Boot Camp problem:

I'm trying to install bootcamp 3.0 to my PC (and have even tried to upgrade to 3.1). I have Win7 64-bit machine. I'm trying to do this so I can use the brightness controls for the 30-inch cinema monitor I just acquired. Every time I try to run Bootcamp from the control panel, I get this error:

I don't know what else to do. Installing Boot Camp is the only solution I've found to try and fix this. The worst part, if I hit the buttons on the side of the monitor the brightness icon comes up on the bottom of the screen, but it wont adjust up and the icon just stays there until I kill Boot Camp in the task manager. I can't find any drivers for this monitor and it's not bad, it's just dim. I'd really like to be able to turn up the brightness to standard levels. Otherwise, I may be stuck with just turning up my gamma on my video card.

So, my Macbook Pro seems to be running quite a bit slower than when it was new. It reminds me a lot of when I used a PC and it would become infected with viruses and malware and shit that I picked up on the interwebs.
    Few questions:
Is that likely what's going on with my Mac now? How true are the statements that say that Macs don't get viruses/spyware, etc.?
How do I fix this? I know that when I used Windows, I never really found a program that was good at removing all of that junk, so every so often, I would just back up important stuff and reformat. Is that likely the best way to fix these problems on my Mac?

    Couple of things:

New OSX update was pushed out today, so it might just be that you're downloading it in the background. It's around 300MB, so depending on your connection speed, it might be slowing things down. There is a Mac Defender virus out there, and this push supposedly helps to get rid of it.

    Go read this: <a class="postlink" href="http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4650" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4650</a>

Likewise, if you have purchased apps from the app store, they might be downloading updates in the background. That happened to me this morning with an XCode update of 4.5GB when the App Store preferences were reset.

Check to see what's running on your Mac. Open up the Activity Monitor and see what apps are running with high CPU, and see what your memory is. If you're getting to the point where you are running out of memory (by always sleeping never restarting your Mac, or because of custom add-ons to Firefox are leaking memory, or just FF itself bloating to fuck, etc), it could be swapping into virtual memory, which is hard disk rather than memory. HUGE slowdown in the UI. Don't just restart it to see if that fixes it, as it won't tell you what the cause is. Check the Activity Monitor.

Time Machine. Is it running in the background? Personally, I just leave it off, and run backups manually when I feel I need them.

Try to "fix permissions" on your disk. It could be that there's an automatic job running in the background that is having issues. (Some indexing stuff runs every so often, and if the disk permissions are screwed, it can make it work harder than it should).

As a last resort, try restarting it.

I went ahead and installed updates and rebooted to install them. Seems to be running smoother. Out of all of the things that you suggested, the only one I really do is sleep my computer instead of powering off. A lot of times I will run it for weeks (months?) without a reboot or a power off. It's never seemed like a problem before, but maybe that's what's caused my problems now.
Thanks for the suggestions Nett. If it gets worse, I guess I will have to take it from there.

    Glad to hear it.

While sleep is a great thing, sometimes it's a good thing to reboot.

I generally reboot my older MacBook Pro about once a week. (My new one gets powered off almost daily as the SSD let's me power on and boot in under 7 seconds).

Also check your available disk space, and empty your trash. If you run out of disk space, it can cause the thing to thrash a bit.

I'll second this, uTorrent plus a good tracker/website is all you need. I especially like that you can set it to automatically read torrents out of a folder and trash the original torrent file. Keeps things tidy.

My late-2008 white MacBook has had an issue with the battery swelling for some time now, to the point that the battery cover protrudes from the case. I used to run some pretty CPU- and graphics-intensive games on it which drove the core temperature through the roof (~170 F). Is this something to be worried about? What's the worst that could happen? I get some issues with the touchpad registering clicks when I'm not clicking (the battery presses against the touchpad), but otherwise nothing major.

Cheers, I'll probably head to an Apple store at some point. Helps that it's an easy fix.

    iTunes/MacBook Pro problem:

I got a MacBook Pro with the Lion operating system let week, and have synced the iTunes on the Mac with my old PC. Only albums I bought from iTunes went over to the new Mac, but I figured that's just the way Macs work and I'll have to put the CDs I have into the Mac manually to transfer them over(right?).

But the problem I'm having has to do with my iPhone 3GS. When I plugged it into the Mac, it transferred all the music(bought from iTunes) onto the Mac, but also "took" two albums from my phone and put them exclusively on the Mac(so they're no longer on my phone). Is there anyway to get the two albums my Mac "stole" from my phone back onto my phone? I've tried dragging them onto my iPhone when it's plugged in but no dice. I've also tried Googling this but just got instructions on how to sync/move songs from iPhone to Mac.

    Thanks in advance.

So I propped a new SSD in my 2009 Macbook, and now it's taking about 5 seconds for EFI to pick up the drive and start booting.

When I first inserted the drive I held the key to set it as my default boot device, and also set it as default in system preferences once I'd booted properly. The boot once the apple logo shows up is really quick, but prior to that not so much.

Most sites suggest I reset.. I believe it was the PRAM, I forget what but it was hold command-option-P-R while rebooting, I went through the reboot cycle three 'chimes' worth doing that and it didn't improve anything.

    ANy tips?

For bonus here's a video of it booting, I hit the power button at around 0:59

Try resetting the SMC as well: http://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2010/12/04/how-when-why-to-reset-the-pram-smc-on-your-mac/
