short version: fuck around with it, let's see what it does and how it works. long version: our previous "rep" module hasn't been supported for quite a while and wasn't easy to get working with the new version of the forum software. binary found something that seems similar, called the karma mod. it's been added, but we haven't turned it on, until now. the original idea was to investigate it on a separate test board, and see what we could do about integrating our past reps into the current mod. fuck it. i've enabled it so that we can all get exposed to it and see how it works, and i can always convert the past reps (that have been safely saved) and reload them later. so yeah, play, and then let us know what you think. don't be shy, just go use it on anyone and every one.
so, from what i can see, you get a certain amount of karma to use over a set period of time. i've given everyone 50 karma, and you have to wait 2 hours before you can rep the same person again. you need 50 karma or 15 posts in order to be allowed to give karma. you can send a message, but you don't have to. you can be notified of karma changes by pm, but not email. for now, i've made karma comments public, so you can view them. up until now, that's only been available to the mods, but we'll see... let me know what you think... do you like the idea of them being private, so you'll post more provocative and privately entertaining shit? feedback welcome.
on the main board index you can see the bottom row showing top karma'd users, and their karma points: when you go to give karma, it should open a new page with "increase user's karma" page that is a big text box for you to enter your message and select karma points from a drop-down:
i've just sent you karma (why, i have no idea...), and you now show karma points under your name. when i click on that, i can view your karma messages. you should also probably have a pm saying you now have karma. do you not get any of that stuff showing up?
put me in the "firmly like them being public" camp. that way, at least ideally, you shouldn't be able to get away with harassing people.
so, can you guys try them out and let me know if they work? is everyone in the same camp as juice, or do they work?
i saw the karma + - buttons and pressed on it and it said i don't have enough karma to give any. and then the buttons disappeared and i can do nothing. edit: nevermind, is back now.
ok, think i figured out why it wasn't showing... thought two settings were or instead of and. now you need a minimum of 5 posts to be able to give karma.
it seems that there is some sort of algorithm that gives more karma for older accounts with more posts... new accounts have very limited karma to give. how that works, i don't know, but be aware that if you're a newer account or don't post much, or have much karma yourself, you're not going to have much karma to give.
this. also, i may be in the minority here, but am i the only one who likes how "old school" the buttons look for karma? i know that wasn't by design, but i say keep them that way. adds character. looks like something out of aol or geocities.
those are the defaults, and we'll probably be moving away from the current ones. for now, it works... we can make things look better some other time.
where are the buttons so i can karma myself? some of my posts are pretty awesome and i just want to recognize myself appropriately.
wait a tic... i thought we were gonna be able to see the "karma" comments? is that now disabled? because at least i can't see it.
