Former Harvard star/current Suns victory cigar Jeremy Lin used to get shit all the time: http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1953708,00.html
If the banana was whole, it was brought there with the intent to be racist. If the banana was partially eaten, the guy just liked bananas and threw whatever was at hand. Case solved.
Standard disclaimer: I am talking out of my ass. I have no formal education on psychology or any of this nonsense. Sports, especially when you go to a live game, is pretty tribal in nature. When you go to a game, it doesn't matter who you are. Accountant, student, unemployed bum, doesn't matter. All that matters is cheering on your team; they're the expression of your tribe's fitness. When your team wins, your tribe is victorious and superior... and vice versa when they lose. When your team loses, YOU lose. Losing sucks. This is why people get in fights with other fans and engage in mindless hatred of opposing team members. Those guys are symbols of your opposition; they're STANDING IN THE WAY of your tribe's rise to greatness. And that makes them easy to hate. I can definitely see someone throwing a banana at a black man as a manifestation of this. Somewhere in this guy's primitive tribal mind, he's thinking, "Well that guy's DIFFERENT. I'm gonna exploit that difference and marginalize him!" Perfectly reasonable... if you're living in 4000 BC and trying to sow discord among the enemy hunter-gatherers. Not exactly a good move in the present day.
Focus: Discuss the incident. What's your take? Well, it only took less than a week to make himself out to be the Kobe Bryan of the NHL. Personally, I don't think anything thrown on the ice at a hockey game can immediately be a "racist action" considering the myriad of shit that gets tossed in the name of "tradition" these days. Rats, hats, beef, fish, live SHARKS, and of course octopus, just to name a few. Maybe this guy just wanted to start his own tradition.
Dude, they're already playing on ice. Lack of friction doesn't seem to be an issue for these mostly-canadian beastmen
EVERYBODY is hunting who did this. Believe me, my entire city is collectively pissed off about it. Many are offering bounties to publicly expose who threw it.
They found him and charged him. http://www.thestar.com/sports/hocke...-in-banana-throwing-incident-at-nhl-game?bn=1
I'm just glad it didn't take place in Detroit. That's the last thing the city needs. Charged him on what? The article says "Police say Chris Moorhouse of London, Ont., has been served a summons for engaging in a prohibited activity under the provincial Trespass to Property Act." What does that mean? Throwing things on the ice?
Yes. The police said thats what they would use as an excuse for an arrest. Damn. I was hoping it would be someone I know.
Is there even a semblance of hope for Detroit to become a livable city again or would it be better to just burn it down and start over? Just as the native prairies rely on wildfires to start life anew, so too could Detroit benefit from a little fire.
That's what bothers me. I keep hearing about this like it was the fucking Rodney King beatings. So he threw a fucking banana, is that really the worst thing that happened at the JLC? There's 3 black players in the NHL of course they are going to get called out on it? Not because of any racial tension just because it's the most obvious thing to do. The correct thing to do would have been for everyone to collectively agree that this guy was an asshole and maybe ban bananas from the JLC.
I believe his story: he stole it from one of those fruit juice carts and chucked it because he basically wanted to throw something on the ice. If he was a Wings fan, they're usually known for throwing slimy tentacled sea life onto the ice at random moments. Those carts ARE in there, and they have bananas hanging off them like Christmas tree ornaments- easy pickens. It's also an arena where fans are known for showing good behavior, so there's not shitloads of security. But geez man, HOW many black dudes play in the NHL? This is a bottomless arguement.
Maybe it was meant in a racist way, and if so, that's shitty, but I really don't see why they're so sure. I think it's completely plausible that he was at a pre season game, drank a few beers, and threw whatever he had at a player who happened to be black. (I know I don't feel like eating bananas after I've been drinking, I'd probably throw it too.) Why does everybody feel the need to publicly "condemn" the incident right away? From the article Angel posted: How can you not read that and laugh at this whole thing? Especially when Simmonds (the player) was about to shoot in a shootout, and he was the fucking guy who scored the goal that forced the shootout. Again, maybe the guy was being racist. That's a definitely a possibility, and would be a big deal. I just think it's ridiculous how quickly people feel the need to tell each other they're not racist. I condemn that act, because I'm not racist! Oh me too, absolutely. I just think it's so unfortunate that we live in a society with racism like that. Yeah me too, we should totally have a press conference to tell people how bad we think racism is.
Not even a trace of irony, huh. What does that even mean, "the obvious thing to do"? Is being black something to be "called out"? As if we wouldn't know he was black unless someone threw a banana on the ice. This post is dumb as shit.
I never once looked at this banana incident as an act of racism. I simply saw it as a stupid fan throwing something onto the ice for the sake of throwing something onto the ice. In any event... Just so I'm clear... It's VERY bad to throw fruit onto the ice, but I can still call Sean Avery anything I want and get away with it, right?
I think because it's SPORTS, and the nature of heckling someone who is not your team means you just yell out random shit that occurs. Ever been to a sporting event? There's always some drunk guy in the bleachers yelling obscenities at whoever he doesn't like on the field/ice/wherever. I don't think it points to some deep-seated hatred of any particular group. If, instead, someone had yelled at one of the players with an Italian last name, "Hey you stupid fucking wop, learn to fuckin' skate!" would we be debating that, too?
I'm not sure if we would be debating something like that because it's not nearly as obvious as throwing a fucking banana on the ice. That said, I've heard stories about Roberto Luongo being taunted with italian slurs like this for years while playing in the QMJHL. As far as the Simmonds incident goes, Mike Babcock sums up my position on it. http://www.csnphilly.com/sportsnetP...-red-wings-speak-on-the-simmonds-incident.htm
