I admit it, I have become addicted to criticizing this show. It needs a thread.

First of all, holy shit Shoshanna's got a rockin' body. Cannot blame that not-a-virgin-slayer for diving in tongue first.

That said, question for the women: Is Adam supposed to be in any way attractive? Aside from his decent build, I cannot find a single attractive quality about him. And not even in the "He's such a jerk with his motorcycle and superficial charm, why do girls like him?" way, but rather in a "He looks like the fifth Beatle who got kicked out of the band for having fetal alcohol syndrome, and he lacks all semblance of empathy, wit, charm, intellect, ambition or talent, and lives like a permanent drugged out slob while jerking off to fantasies of raping middle schoolers" kinda way.

No. He's just supposed to be a jackass and everyone is supposed to be rooting for her to stop sleeping with him because it's sad.

I know it's supposed to be sad, but usually those situations are more "Oh I know he's hot girl, but he don't respect you!" type sad, not "Why are you fucking this diseased rodent that crawled out of the Lincoln Tunnel?" sad.

No. It's the second one all the way. He has no redeeming qualities and he's not attractive. She's just desperate for someone to love her. I don't know. That's how I see it. Maybe be is actually supposed to be attractive.

That is IMPOSSIBLE. A near-sighted mole with an inner ear infection would still think Otis Nixon is more attractive than him. He looks retarded. On the other hand, why feel sorry for his "girlfriend" who isn't really redeeming very much herself. At all. Ever. Unless awkward selfishness is sexy to men, which it isn't.

I'm giving the show 5 episodes, so it has one left. I think.

All of the characters are absolutely repellant. Brian Williams has a hot daughter, though. And I want to see David Mamet's daughter's tits. And the daughter of the drummer from Bad Company has a nice turd cutter.

Lena, good choice casting a bunch of girls who are obviously that entitled in real life.

Adam is a butterface. He also does appear to have a huge wang judging from how high up his hand was going when he was jacking off in the last episode. I agree that he's not supposed to be a likeable character. I do think he's a very well written character. I mentioned in one of my first posts about the show either in the TiBette Thread or the drunk thread that I've met many Adams. He definitely represents a type of twentysomething male that exists these days. (Maybe they've always existed.) I could understand why Hannah was sleeping with him in the first episode or two. I feel like we've all made that mistake, and I know plenty of girls who continue to sleep with or date guys that they're not really interested in for validation, or because they honestly believe that no one else would ever be interested in or sleep with them again. But I think even they would dump a guy who accidentally sent them a picture of his dick that was meant to be for someone else. She did mention that Adam was only the second or third guy she's slept with as a college graduate, but she doesn't come off as insecure enough for me to understand the appeal of the relationship with her. She's not particularly attractive, but she seems comfortable enough with her body, and she's pretty damn self-absorbed about her personality. Shrug.

I did find the power play interesting in this last episode. I can totally understand why she'd be into that when she feels so out of control over the rest of her life. It would be cool if they explored that further, and had a female character on TV that was into being dominating. (Samantha Jones did it sometimes, kind of, but not as explicitly.)

I'm getting impatient for actual storylines to develop.

One thing about this show: it's unflinching in its nudity of 'normal' people, men and women. Kinda brave for a show that's got this much exposure.

I thought this episode was the best so far. It feels like the show's coming into its own. I'm not sure how much I can take of Hannah going back to Adam again and again, though. The very last moment was so irritating.

I want Jessa's feather thing so badly.

I can't tell if I'm supposed to hate these characters and the show is genius, or I'm supposed to like them and this show sucks.

I think you're supposed to hate the characters, but they're pushing it a little too far at times. There was a rush of articles about creating female characters that audiences hate to prove a feminist point when the movie Young Adult came out, and I think this is supposed to be part of that "movement," but I have to say that creating equal-opportunity-asshole characters isn't a feminist goal I support that much.

Watched an episode of this show where the characters are at a party. While not bad, it didn't excite me, either.

Unlike most people in this topic, I'm completely lukewarm towards most of the characters. I neither like nor hate them. And this reaction is tied to my biggest problem with the show; it's too cartoonish for what it's trying to do.

For a series that is trying to push the realism angle and occasionally succeeds (certain elements of Jessa's character, certain depictions of a party, and certain points of the Hannah-Adam relationship all ring true), there is still way too much Hollywood buffoonry and BS for me to take the whole thing seriously. For instance, Shoshanna is an absurdly stupid, over-the-top character that is as authentic as Bugs Bunny. It doesn't help matters that David Mamet's daughter can't act to save her life, either. Hurray for nepotism. The exchange with "punks" that looked like clean-cut, upper middle-class white guys and beat up Jessa's boss was something that belonged in "The Hangover". Him crying in the hospital is the type of melodramatic, fake crap I expect in brain-dead romance films, not "smart" dramas.

As a result, the show occupies a weird space where it's substantially more true-to-life than most Hollywood series but still a long way from reality. It was just good enough for me to give another episode a shot, although if this was supposedly the best installment yet, I shudder to think what its predecessors were like...

If you re-watch the scene again you'll notice that his crying was indeed fake. His approach completely changed once he saw crying wouldn't get him in bed with Jessa.

I think the show is fairly entertaining. While it may not be true to life, I have to ask, how entertaining would that be?

I've watched some of these episodes multiple times due to various female friends wanting to watch them so I'm all caught up. I genuinely like this show. This show borders on the edge of being one of the most realistic dramas, then they take you out with absurdity. Like after Marnie's bf freaks then leaves, Hannah turns around an asks about her writing, really? Is she that self-obsessed? The party was also over-the-top. There aren't a of parties like that thrown anywhere devoid of someone asking them for money at the door, advertising or sponsors. Who is paying for that shit? Come on.

Other than that, I love the show and the new development with Adam was pretty interesting. All this time you're sitting there trying to figure out if this guy is fucking retarded or not, and feeling slightly bad for Hannah because she's playing the retarded smitted kitten role but hey, she's also pretty shitty.

In a misguided effort to be a better husband, I've attempted watching this show. Based on my wife's preferences, I had my choice of the following: Girls, Kardashian shit, What Not to Wear, and some other show with a gay interior designer. Given my proclivity for boobs and explosions, I originally chose Kardashians. When I found out there would be no exploding Kardashians, I chose Girls.

I've watched all the episodes to date, and I think the show absolutely blows. I hated the pilot, but to be fair, I hated Deadwood initially, and toughed it out for 4 episodes and loved it. So I gave it a chance.

The writing is ok, not great, not terrible. The characters are shockingly unlikeable. If you're going to have a character driven show, you generally should have one likeable character that you're not actively rooting for their death from scene to scene. I'll try one more, maybe, but I may have to go with the show with the gay interior designer, because even if there are no boobs or explosions, I like the way he yells at people.

I think I may commit suicide when Game of Thrones finishes the season, because I may have nothing left to watch. Wait, VEEP is pretty good, ok, well, I'll wait for that to end before trying the gay interior design show.

I'm surprised so many people have feelings of revulsion towards the main characters. Certainly, there are far dumber, more annoying characters in shows and movies that people are indifferent to or even like. (Well, with the exception of Shoshanna. Who thought that was a good idea?)

Thinking about it, it's a combination of the uncanny valley and not being entertaining enough. On the one hand, the characters are more realistic than we're used to in shows and films, but also lack amusing or interesting qualities. At the same time, they're not quite realistic enough, which explains the creepy, unsettling feeling people get from an uncanny valley.

That being written, I kind of like Jessa, although they could do more with her character. There's an intrinsic hypocrisy to girls like her that the show doesn't seem to explore.

I'm really liking Adam more and more. Probably it's going to implode badly, but for now he's cool.

Yeah, Adam's starting to make a lot more sense.

Also, I'm pretty sure that in every threesome I've had, and every time I've made out with a girl in public, there has always been a guy whispering "Just follow your instincts" just outside my peripheral vision. Here's pro tip for the guys: Don't do that. It's fucking creepy.

I just want to check something. Am I some kind of freak for backing into a shower? Every time someone's taking a shower in the movies or on TV, they always step into the stream face-first. I don't think I ever face directly into the stream.
