I just finished book 4, it was such a trial...took me about 3 months to finally get through it. I still haven't heard anything about Rickon since the beginning of the third book, I hope he still plays a part along with Bran; such as why the fuck they decided to go north of the Wall? I'm also interested in the Tyrion story line, where he went, what he's doing, etc. Also intriguing is the Sansa and Littlefinger story line, I'm trying to figure out Littlefingers motives but can't come to a conclusion yet. I'm also extremely happy what GRRM did with Cercei, that bitch deserves what I hope she's going to get. I'm excited about book 5, learning about Dany and her dragons, Jon and the wall, Arya and her training, the Greyjoy fleet, etc.

Anyone know any timeline of book 6?

Glad you are enjoying the series, man.

As to book 6, there is no official release date. Realistically? I have been following the series since inception, with the five year and six year waits....I would venture late 2014 at soonest, and that is ONLY because HBO needs to know more story to film it. With no series, I would have guessed 2015 at least. Sorry to not bring happier news!

As of now, Martin has not said. He managed to piss off most of his fan base by constantly revising his finish date for 'Dance.' The first three were completed between 96-00, Feast, 05, Dance, 11.

A realistic estimate might be 2014, as he allegedly has 400 pages of manuscript as of a couple months ago. The books (6 and 7) are slated to come in around 1500 pages - which is what caused the issue with Feast (after a certain length, most publishers will not publish as one book).

My guess? What was originally to be a trilogy, which became five, begat 6 and 7, will more than likely run 9. He's introducing more geography in the new ones. If I had to bet, Wind's manuscript will be around 1800, split (hopefully not by geography after the disaster that was Feast/Dance) and published as two novels (neither being 'A Dream of Spring' - the erstwhile title of the penultimate book in the series).

So think Winds, Part One 2014, Winds Part Two 2015, Dream 2018, Dream Part Two 2020.

I also assume Martin will really piss us all off and drop dead in 2017 with only half of Dream written.

He'll be dead by 2020. I have a feeling he's going to wrap it up in 7 still. Feast/Crows he was document saying he didn't know where he was going to take it, that is why there is some "meandering" then he figured it out. Let me beat my dead horse and say I don't think those two books were that bad, they were just the chess pieces getting moved around to what is going to happen in the next two books. Lots of shit is going to go down in them and all this stuff had to get set first.

To clarify this a little (and also because I don't want to start my reading yet) Martin originally planned for a timeskip after book 3. He later decided that this wasn't do-able without being shitty and smashed together and so went back to write the parts he was going to skip. He ran into some trouble making it all fit together and that was what caused the delay. Supposedly there's no such issue with the last two books so in theory he should be closer to the publishing schedule of the first three books than the last two now. We'll see I guess.

While I agree that the events were *necessary*, that doesn't make the books *good*.

Well they weren't absolute disasters as some people have phrased it. People act like reading those books was akin to getting ass raped by a Giant's treetrunk club.

They weren't total disasters. If you want a total disaster, Song of Susannah in the Dark Tower series was a serious waste of time and paper.

Am I the only one who has stopped reading Dance w/ Dragons for fear that the next book won't come out for another two or three years? I figure if I read it all now, I'll forget what's going on when Winds of Winter comes out. I'll probably just wait until the actual release date is set and then go back and read all of DWD so I can transition right into the new book.

I read that last book few books when they came out.
The last book was not good, and it was only multiplied by the fact I couldn't remember anything that happened before.
Especially for the characters that didn't have POV's in the last book. i even forgot who some of the POV's were.

I'm probably not going to bother with the next book until the series is done (so never?), and re-read it all.

I've already started reading the series again just to know where I'm at when this next season starts on HBO. I forgot how long the books are but for the most part its good reading. I should have probably waited until the next book was out or the series is finished, like you mentioned, but I'm impatient.

    IRT Winds of Winter
"I am working on it. It will be a long time coming. I have many many more pages to do, but I have some great stuff planned for it: a lot of blood and fire and death and devastation and ravens coming home to roost."

    IRT the tv show
I don't know how I feel about that. Which characters that are still alive in Dance w/ Dragons are expendable enough to axe out of the show and not have an effect on the story line? Brienne? Theon? Asha? Bran or Rickon?

a pretty good list right there actually. I suspect you have to keep Bran, but the rest could probably be axed after a certain point with their effects on the story shifted to others or done by nameless minions.

Rickon doesn't really doesn't have much story around him so I don't think he really needs to be killed off, just put on a bus. Brienne is kind of important for Jaime's character development and she was last seen getting hung anyway, so I don't know if they need to go out of their way to kill her. Theon and Asha however don't really add anything to the overall story so I think they're both good candidates for elimination.

Just in terms of dying before they die in the books, Brienne's role in, say, Feast For Crows could be readily dispensed with. She's handy for Jaime during their trek back to King's Landing, but I'll punch the HBO producers if they then make me watch her meander around the kingdom randomly asking for Sansa before getting hanged, sort of, by Catelyn.

I've found Bran's storyline to be profoundly uninteresting since Game of Thrones, and ever since he's gone north of the Wall it's gone completely off the reservation and it REALLY wouldn't translate well to screen. I generally feel the series is at its strongest when there's no magic involved, and the whole Heart Trees thing is all kinds of weird. So yeah, he could go. But he's a pretty strong audience favourite.

Theon is pretty much completely useless in terms of storyline because after he takes Winterfell he's a completely passive force, so he could go. Asha(?) Greyjoy is also pointless, and I think she was probably the single biggest miscasting of the show so far, so I don't think she'll be around for long.

Loras Tyrell will probably get killed off after the whole Tyrell power-grab plays out. Possibly Jorah Mormont?

I'm betting Roz and Hodor make it to the final season, though.

Pretty much agree with all of this, especially the Bran stuff. I find his chapters to be the most boring to read.

I really want GRRM to write a previous chapter entirely from Hodor's perspective, just to fuck with people.
