Having made it through 4 books you should know this already, but I'll remind you: it all matters, and there are plenty of fake outs along the way. Stick with it. There will be a payoff.

I agree with both of you. Almost everything he writes has a purpose in the story. As for individually describing every one of the thirty dishes at a banquet in extravagant detail and other similarly overly verbose junk, he can cut that shit out.

Have you seen the man? Dude clearly loves him some food. If diabetes doesn't get him before he finishes book seven, heart disease probably will.

So I just finished them all. I enjoyed the last book immensely because of the comeuppance dealt out with Cersei, hearing Arya's story, the emotional rollercoaster of Jon at the wall all ready to go fuck shit up and then stabby stabby good time with Wun Wun smashing knights like so much detritus. I enjoyed reading about Daynerys and Drogon but was left ultimately unsatisfied. A lot of the book seemed to meander. Everyone is stuck in idle. Reading the Theon chapter at the end which is meant to be a part of the next book as well just added more questions - Why is the Bastard of Bolton (don't let him hear me call him that) saying that he has Stannis' head on a pike if that isn't the case? Are Tommen and his kittens going to make it out of this one? What the fuck is with Bran and why should I give two shits? It seems to me that being a greenseer has no real gain for the world at large. It does nothing to help anyone truly. What is the point? Why haven't we heard from Jamie? If Jon is some long lost Targaryen, why does the book constantly refer to his burned hand? Why did the book start off with all of this talk of Dorne only to abandon it? I could go on and on here. A lot of stuck in neutral but I did genuinely enjoy it so so so so much more than its predecessor.

This Arianne chapter of the book has been available online for a while: <a class="postlink" href="http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-f ... of-winter/</a> He's not done with Dorne yet.

Speaking of Arianne, if they include her in the show I hope they can find an appropriately hot, large breasted, raven haired actress willing to bare it all repeatedly.

I'll ask this question here because I haven't read the books but for those of you who have has Jon Snow's mother been revealed? I was at the bar and 2 guys I didn't know where getting in a flat out argument over it. I like the show but damn I don't think I'd be that loud about it in a bar.

It's never been outright declared, but there's been a bunch of red herrings and in-story hearsay. The dominant theory is that Jon is the lovechild of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

    Welcome to the spoiler thread.

And that is all but confirmed by GRRM himself. The first question he asked the HBO guys was "Who is Jon Snow's mother?" so obviously it's been answered by the books already.

It hasn't been answered by the books already. He never gave them an answer saying yes or no. It's JUST the dominant theory.

Actually I saw in an interview that he did give them both a yes answer, but they didn't say what was their guess. Realistically, they would both have the same guess as everyone else so it's all but settled at this point. I imagine this is part of the reason the show has been so devoid of clues as compared to the books. It's not going to be much of a reveal when we find out for sure.

Other than the scene in Season 1 where Jon is about to go to the Wall and Ned tells him that they will discuss it the next time they meet, there hasn't been any discussion or concern with Jon's lineage up to this point in the show.

You're right. I was going by this. "He didn't tip his hand, but you could tell we got it right." So RR hasn't confirmed it but yeah.

Also, the switch from Ilyn Payne to Bronn was pretty fucking awesome. Hopefully we'll be seeing a lot more of him and Jaime shooting back one-liners.

Faking having killed the Stark boys seemed to work out well, no reason to not try it with Stannis too.

And then this, from the wiki:
I doubt Bran would be the most special special person if there was no reason. He's gonna warg out and fuck some shit up, and I bet he's gonna be the only one who can find and reunite all the Stark children too.

What is the relation between the Children of the Forest and the Others, if any? If there is one, I think that will be critically important to the ending.

That relationship hasn't really been discussed. My gut tells me they were opposed at one time, and may well be the reason why the 'Others' went away for so long. Maybe with their return, there is a coinciding return of the Children of the Forest.

Martin has repeatedly said that far more of the next two books will take place north of the wall than in previous books.

So thanks to an asshole here at work myself and another coworker are now fully aware of the Tyrion story arc. Gee thanks fuckhead, I didn't want to watch the rest of the season anyway.

We had to walk away because he was trying to ruin as much shit as he could, he doesn't like the show, he is a book purist who intentionally ruins shit when people bring up the show around him.
