This is really quite interesting... because for many years now, Apple's iMessage has been used for illegal activity messaging because it is much more secure than most of the simple alternatives. Apple has used the defence of "we are not responsible for the content over our systems, much like a phone" to keep them at arms length from any illegal activity that they may help due to their communications platforms.

Did Jay-Kay from Jamiroquai SERIOUSLY have to give an official statement saying he isn’t the Q horn hat guy? Are you fucking KIDDING me? “Well, that British guy who sings ‘Little L’ also wears big hats, must be the same guy.” He only lives on the other side of the fucking planet.

    What a world.

Apparently no one has used it to try to overthrow a legally elected government yet.

I think the difference ultimately will be between a direct messaging system like iMessage, Signal, Telegram, AIM (RIP), etc, and a broadcast medium like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. It'll be interesting where Discord lands given that it kind of straddles the line.

People are whining about getting censored by private corporations.

It's like they don't even know what the word actually means.

It's like they don't care about being wrong as long as their whining can get them attention.

ToyToy for a self proclaimed centrist you are spending a ton of time defending far right demagogs. What kind of people are you hanging out with that makes you think that you represent the middle?

I think a lot of people conflate freedom of speech and censorship.

I love how half the nation right now doesn’t understand that free speech works both ways.

I could get banned from this board tomorrow for no reason or any reason. It’s nett’s board, he makes the rules, can change the rules, and can decide that my particular face is in need of a fist and say fuck you. Or like how people bitch about getting their driver’s license suspended for a DUI or tickets or something — it’s a privilege, not a right. Play by the rules or get out. Or do something else to compete.

yes, Twitter and Facebook should have done this a long time ago in my opinion. I think about 5 years ago sounds right. And years of in action aren’t excused by finally doing the right thing. However, it was their prerogative to allow him a platform. And they should be lauded for their actions today. It was his right to say what he did, just as it is their right to ban him for it (and the right of countless attorneys I’m sure to file suit against him for those actions and words).

Funny how the party of personal responsibility gets bent out shape when it's time to take some responsibility for their actions.

This isn't a free speech issue. Free speech means the government can't censor you. Twitter is a private enterprise and can allow who they wish to participate.

But, they don't impose their rules uniformly, which one again, is also their right. It;'s also within google and Apple's rights as private enterprises to drop the platform Trump moved to immediately.

In other words, a coordinated censoring between the three entities. It's their right, but it also should frighten you that 3 different mega companies just got together and limited the free exchange of ideas. Granted, they were stupid ideas, but do we really want to go down the path that is leading? Where mega corporations decide which speech is allowed and which is to be censored? Especially when for the past 4 years you could search Twitter at any time for "Assassinate Trump" and come up with plenty of tweets. They're not exactly a paragon of virtue in that regard.

I'm good with shutting down ideas that lead to the collapse of the country. There is nothing to be gained to allow a wannabe despot to foment sedition so he can stay in power.

Considering that you can still go on any of these platforms and find any sort of weird shit, this argument doesn't hold a lot of water.
