Nobody will ever come close to Trump, but Obama discredited fox news and other conservative media somewhat regularly. I don't get what the problem would be anyway. The press shouldn't be held in some special esteem as if they were infallible. There's wrong times to do it and wrong ways to do it, but there is nothing wrong with discrediting the press in general. Given how terrible they have been in the last decade that seems more true than ever.
They discredit themselves regularly with naked bias and repeated fuck ups to be the first to report a story. The Edward R Murrow impartial 4th estate news reporting is pure fiction as a concept in today’s world.
They fuck shit up on the regular but that doesn’t make them enemies of the public as Trump puts them. I noticed no challenges to global warming. It doesn’t make any sense to like a guy on his fiscal policy if he disbands the EPA and the temps start creeping up because of mankind.
Is it bad that the two main places I go for political news now is here and reddit (the r/keeptrack stuff is good)? I can’t even watch tv news anymore. Unless you count The Weather Channel. I’m glued to that shit during hurricane season.
Is it bad that my two main news sources are here, and Rush Limbaugh? I wish it wasn't like that, but there's nothing else remotely news related on the radio stations down here, and I can listen to it in customers' cars. You have to carefully pick out the facts from the opinionated bullshit, but it does give you some kind of idea about what's going on.
Yes, that is very bad. Invest in a Bluetooth speaker and use your phone to download podcasts or stream radio.
I was just talking to my business partner and he'll spout off the most insane shit. I'll ask him where he heard it and he'll go "Dude, it's everywhere. Tucker Carlson is talking about it, Rush, Grudge Report, Turning Point USA" Oh, that's why your views are so skewed. Unfortunately, there aren't many (any?) news sources that aren't pretty biased.
Are you serious with this shit? The press is the only one of the biggest things that acts on a check on power in a democracy. And besides, nobody should expect the press to be perfect because the press has never been perfect. Bitching about the press for reporting shit that you don't like and encouraging others to feel the same way is about as fascist as it gets. So many people conflate the press reporting on information that is known at the time as the press being bad after the fact when new information comes to light. As if the press has the benefit of foresight. Do journalists have implicit biases? Absolutely, they do. But denigrating all press because they're too lazy to read multiple sources is idiotic. Commentators like Tucker Carlson and Rachel Maddow do not report news. They give their opinion on the news and cherry pick whatever facts they want in order to be more persuasive. But if you or really, anybody else thinks all press is bad, go to a country where there is no free press and let us know how much freedom they have.
I mean, I’m a liberal yahoo. Try Left, Right, and Center by KCRW and Global News Podcast by BBC. This is a liberal yahoo opinion but downloading The NPR One app would be good too. They give three minutes of straight news updated throughout the day.
I would say Dan Carlin’s Common Sense, but he seems to have stopped putting them out(it was roughly once every two weeks) since Trump got elected. I second NPR.
Hes about to release a book this month, so I think thats been taking up his time. He hasnt released a Hardcore History episode since January either. Right or left, this is a pretty funny article.
I lost a ton of respect for Joe when he didn't call out Jordan Peterson's all meat diet as total bullshit. Fitness and diet are things that Joe is an actual expert on and to have a guest pedaling scurvy as a diet is something he should have pushed back on. It would be like Net signal boosting Sony's former information security expert.
I like Joe Rogan a lot because he allows people with all sorts of different opinions on his show. He had Bernie on his show a month or so ago and it was very informative to hear him talk and not be boiled down to a sound bite. He just tends to let people talk with minimal resistance no matter how nutty they are. Especially Abby Martin.
The best interviewers let their subjects speak for themselves. Marc Maron does exceptional interviews, I find he’s far better at that than stand-up.
I don't think they've served this function since at least the start of the Iraq war, probably longer. The modern mainstream media outlets are little more than propaganda arms of the two parties. Fox news will never serve as a check on republicans, and only very, very rarely will MSNBC or CNN serve as a check on democrats. When they try to serve as a check on the opposite party they usually fuck it up beyond all recognition. Do you remember the last two years when they devoted the majority of their coverage to an unfounded collusion conspiracy theory, and if not that were writing incessantly about Trump playing too much golf? They fucking suck. Do I even need to start with all the crazy shit conservative media accused Obama of that was either nothing even close to illegal, or was entirely made up? If the media was living up to this role at all, they would be covering quid pro quo corruption every day. It is the biggest and most recurrent story to anyone who cares about being a "check on power" with respect to the US government. They barely cover it at all, and when they do examine campaign finance it's usually through the lens of a titillating scandal (eg Trump's porn star) rather than the rampant corruption in both houses of congress. They love this whistle blower who's holding Trump accountable for starting a partisan investigation so we can start another partisan investigation. Shit, they must really love whistle blowers who sound the horn on things like exposing torture, mass surveillance, direct violations of the 4th and 5th amendments. You know, actually important abuses of power the public have a right to know about. They must really love those guys. Oh wait, no they don't. I don't think "all press is bad", but I remember it very well. Yeah, state sponsored press is worse. I still think the modern press in the United States is terrible.
