So empathy is a zero sum game to you? I’m not even defending this particular kid. We are in for much rougher times if your train of thought becomes pervasive.
He said some really racist shit, and got a minor slap on the wrist for it. We never would have heard about this story if not for conservative media's hardon for being the victim. Hell, he might even learn from this (although I doubt it). I'll save my empathy for situations where it might do some good.
The desire to drop racial epithets to your hearts content seems like a strange hill to die on. But, if people feel left out or deprived in any way by not being able to that.........then go nuts. I'm sure it'll work out just fine.
People have made this equivalent post so many times over the last few years. Who the fuck are you talking to? Who the fuck said this? Disagree with me or whoever all you want, but don't sit there and pretend my position is something completely different than what I said. Stop being retarded.
Then what are you actually defending? Anyone with half a brain cell can pretty easily figure out what you can/can't say in a professional or public setting. If a person has an inability to not drop n-bombs in a public setting, then I don't think they'll be curing cancer anytime soon. If something similar happened to someone of the liberal persuasion we'd have to listen to the clever response of "Hurr Durr Hurr. Play stupid games. Win stupid prizes". When it happens to a conservative, it's the downfall of modern society. Proof that the liberal thought police have taken over. If it's too hard to control stupid thoughts and actions at work or in public, get a union job. People can be morons all they like.
So you both can't read my posts and you have no idea what happened in the incident in question. Ok then.
If your whole beef is with people digging shit up other people said no matter how long ago and penalizing them for it now, tough shit. Like it or not, you not only represent yourself, but whatever school you attend or company you work for. If anybody (that isn't already famous) acts in a way that is at odds with what society deems acceptable, they get to deal with the consequences, no matter their politics.
4 things- 1. No, that's not how it always works. Not if you're in a position to just wait it out until the media tells people to go get mad about something else, like the Virginia governor. He was way more offensive, and way older when he did it. I guess politics do matter, you know, if you're in them. 2. I love how you think it both works this way AND we live in a white supremacist society. Hilarious. 3. It really is pathetic how many people are willing to accept practically any invasion of privacy, so long as something shitty happens to someone else for something that in no way affected you. This is the modern version of religious zealotry. The parallels are so eerily similar, someone should write a paper on it. 4. It doesn't matter how long ago? So you think someone who was an edgelord teenager in a private setting should reap these consequences forever? What kind of piece of shit are you? Anything to watch someone else burn a little bit, huh? Sounds pretty fucking awful to me, but what do I know? I've never been such a good person that this is where I go to get my satisfaction in life.
I’ve not hired people for way less than them saying The n-word when they were a kid or whatever. I’ve not hired someone just because of a hunch or a feeling. In a competitive environment, the deciding factors become more minute. Harvard’s admittance rate of applicants is 5.4%. If it’s between a kid throwing around racial slurs 5 years prior and someone who didn’t, guess who gets the bid?
Forget about "This is how the world sometimes works" for a moment. We're all well aware of that. Why is this a good thing? If this was about someone constantly being racist, or doing something more substantial then fine, but it isn't. It was being an edgelord, and far as I know, he hasn't done anything over the last two years. I don't think we're dealing with a klansman here. So what exactly is the point of being happy about it, or other stories like this? I see absolutely none, other than being a shitty person who can't find healthier alternatives to get their kicks. I find it funny too that if he had bullied someone for years, and you know, actually fucking did something that made a person miserable and impacted their life he probably would have been fine. You know, as long as he didn't say the wrong word. Not that I would ever accuse people of having coherent or rational morals in the digital age.
1. I never said that it did. I said, "tough shit". There's a difference. That doesn't automatically mean that everybody gets what's coming to them. In fact, I'm pretty sure I qualified what I said with "unless you're already famous". 2. Do you really believe that two things in opposition to each other can't operate in the same space? Hilarious. 3. The dumbass posted in a school Facebook group. You are as stupid as you sound if you think there is any expectation of privacy. Anyway, this isn't about accepting an invasion of privacy. We live in an era where everybody has a high definition recording studio in their hand. If someone catches you doing or saying something egregiously stupid and puts it online, that's on you for acting like a shithead. 4. No, it doesn't. Yes, I do. There are a lot of things you can't control. One of things you can are the words you decide to use. I could use a lot of words to describe how awful of a person I think you are, but you arguing in favor of giving a white man a pass for using a racial slur because he was just being edgy is doing that for me. Why is it so difficult for you to accept that if you did or said something fucked up that you take responsibility for it? Is it because you did or said a lot of fucked up things or what? Edit: Racial slurs being used even once is one too many times. Since you've clearly shown that you have zero respect for what minorities care about because it's too inconvenient for you, maybe you should shut the fuck up about when it's okay to use slurs of any kind. Hint: The answer is never.
There can be white supremacists and there can be opposition to white supremacists, but no, you can't be a white supremacist society and at the same time have everyone, or near everyone immediately get punished when people get a whiff of white supremacy. What you're arguing is patently absurd. I reference the question in my previous post. If he's an ongoing vehement racist - then fine, have at him. If he's not and it's a stupid comment he wouldn't make today, then what is the point? It's not like he really hurt anyone, it was a private group. But even if he marginally hurt anyone, what is the point of celebrating this? I find it really bizarre you think I'm a horrible person because I think everyone should be treated the same, and I'm forgiving when I don't have a reason to believe someone would do something today, or has recently. The fucking horror. I have no illusions, I'm no mother Theresa, but I shudder to imagine what you think a good person looks like. I guess someone who forever hunts those who hath spoken the bad word? Yay? In all honestly, kind of, yeah. I'm not sure they would bother you so much though. Other than a sexist joke here and there for the most part they aren't the 'wrong' things. I've done far worse than saying a racial slur in a private group, that I legitimately felt guilty about. The odds that I face career consequences for any of that today though are virtually zero. I would imagine anyone can remember doing something worse than what this kid did, and if someone can't I find it far likelier that they're totally devoid of introspection rather than that they had just never done anything wrong.
I guess part of the point is that super elite schools like Harvard aren't forgiving on anything else that you do around that period. 16 years old is when you sit for your SATs, and Harvard isn't letting in any 900 scores. 14,15,16 is when a good chunk of your GPA is forged, when you build up your extracurricular resume, when you exemplify your ambition and your morality. The idea that Harvard shouldn't overlook any of those things, but should overlook a kid who whined about all the girls going for "niggerjocks" strikes me as patently absurd.
This first sentence is why you should stop talking about race. Just because a Facebook group is marked "private", doesn't make it so. If it was, then this shit never gets out. Second, the second anybody says a racial slur, it normalizes the use of the word. It doesn't matter if a black person wasn't there to read or not. It lets others who might have been reticent to say those words the freedom to do so. Then those dipshits go out and start saying it in their own groups, and on it goes. Just because you haven't seen it happen doesn't mean it hasn't. Or shit, you being white maybe means you have. Either you are ignorant or stupid for believing this. This asshole can still lose his admittance to Harvard and black people can still be systemically oppressed by hiring managers, the school to prison pipeline and having significantly less wealth than white people. Jesus Christ.
In other news, Oregon is gearing up for something in between Ruby Ridge 2, and the Third Battle of Bull Run. So that'll be fun.
Really? I'm certainly not saying that your sentiment in the first post is wrong, but perhaps your opinion would carry a bit more weight if you weren't guilty of the exact same thing recently.
What they should try, is to stop whining and do their goddamn jobs. Stop ducking everything that you’re too stupid to grasp the concept of.
Actually, that's true. I hear "ni**er" used as frequently as the word "the" in conversation on a regular basis. They are all young black men though.
Hell I say it all the time in my mind. ....there... just said it a thousand times a second. And again... and again....Try to stop me mother fuckers! YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!!!!! God I just love whenever the topic of race comes up here.
