Claiming he fired Mattis is his usual ego-driven nonsense trying to protect himself from the fact that Mattis resigned in protest and scorched him on the way out. The Soviet-Afghan thing had to have been fed to him by an outside source, and it's not something showing up anywhere in American media, be it mainstream or conservative.
