She got elected Speaker because she's the most competent operative in either chamber, except for perhaps McConnell who only ever uses his powers for evil.

Also anyone else weirded out that Trump is repeating Russian propaganda about the Soviet-Afghan war, and not even Soviet propaganda of the era, but modern revisionist history about it?

Yes, and it's one of those things where Trump says so much dumb shit it's hard to differentiate between Are you this fucking stupid? and Are you intentionally trying to misrepresent this?

His revisionism was also as recent history as claiming he fired Mattis.

Claiming he fired Mattis is his usual ego-driven nonsense trying to protect himself from the fact that Mattis resigned in protest and scorched him on the way out. The Soviet-Afghan thing had to have been fed to him by an outside source, and it's not something showing up anywhere in American media, be it mainstream or conservative. The worry is he got it directly from Putin somehow and is repeating it without even a hint of skepticism.

Now our dear leader is threatening that the govt shutdown could go on for years.

I'm sure that'll win him votes in 2020.

The TSA already has employees calling in sick at 300% their usual rate. Any "essential" employee who has or can find a second job is going to that one instead.

Meanwhile he's threatening to declare a state of emergency in order to fund the wall.

    Everything's alright, yes, everything's fine.

EDIT: No but seriously, are people getting their tax refunds this year? Not that Trump is in any hurry to have them go out, since they'll reflect the real impact of last year's tax reforms.

We'll see how deep the cravenness of the Republican party goes. The Congress has the power to terminate any such state of emergency with a joint resolution. This would be a near unprecedented power grab of the executive from the legislative, and if the Republican Senate stands for it, we might as well not have a Senate.

Refunds would normally start going out at the beginning of February. If the government is still shut down at that point, people gon' be pissssssed.

And then what? He’ll triple-dog-dare everyone for the money?

Just stand back and less him piss on any credibility his country has left after this dumpster fire of an administration.

There are about 800,000 federal employees that are furloughed right now, plus "essential" personnel who are working without pay. There are millions of households expecting refunds on their federal taxes.

Trump has said that the government could be shut down for "years", and it's not a big deal because most of the 800k affected are Democrats, and that their landlords will be understanding.

Personally, I think he's full of shit on all three points.

I know I shouldn't be surprised by his lies anymore, but he said that as a landlord himself he would be understanding. This from the guy who sued the estate of a man who died in a fire in Trump Tower because the building didn't have sprinklers because he owed condo fees.

Why are they getting a refund? And, why are they getting refunds year after year that they count on? Maybe that will piss them off, too?
