One of my friends is a mod on an erotica site, and she has recalled livid and intense arguments on consent related to monster fucking. Ie completely hypothetical, unrealistic, fantasy depictions of being fucked (usually humans are not the initiators) by a variety of beasts and they have imposed rules of consent, including requirements for maturity, sentience, communication and some level of awareness. None of this is real, and yet these perverts adhere to more rules than Republicans, and increasingly, Christians in positions of authority. Put another way: you'd have a harder time posting a fictional account of dragon rape and getting peer feedback on the internet than actual molestation of children in a church. Transitioning into a woman still gives you the strength, bones, speed and reflexes of a man, which is far more than a “leg up”. They have two choices at this point: accept male biological traits as an advantage, or ruin women’s sports. Because it will take no time for people originally born men to burn through every female sports record ever set once the flood gates open. Even FloJo’s.

I think it's a little more gray than that. I'm sure someone who transitions M to F at an early age (i.e. early teens) doesn't get the same "leg up" as someone who transitions in there mid to late twenties. There needs to be a nuanced discussion and scientific study to determine a good balance, but no way is that happening in the current political and cultural environment. Outside of sports there is no way the state should be getting in the middle of patients, doctors and parents. Turning Trans people specifically and LBQT people in general into a political wedge is dangerous and frankly straight up evil.
Looking at the suicide rate for kids with dysmorphia, the argument on sports is hilarious. You can't mix genders! Why? Because sports ball would be too easy! The dudes making this argument couldn't name a single WNBA player that wasn't imprisoned in Russia, a single female Olympian or a female athlete not named Serena Williams. Fun test: show the folks complaining about trans people in sports a picture of Serena Williams and Beyonce. Ask them to identify which is which. Laugh at how they get it wrong, cry when you realize how easy that should have been.
I think, for some, it's that they have either a real or imagined child who would have to compete for a spot in the professional leagues against a transworman. The "sports fantasy" is weird and personal in the states.

The LGBT community continually shoots itself in the foot with this bullshit. Treating every single tangential topic with absolute, uncompromising zealotry will never generate the broad support they want.
Surely it's the LGBT community that is treating the situation with absolute zealotry, and not the say the Republican governor who is personally revoking liquor licenses from hotels for hosting drag events, or reworking the governing structure of entire towns because Disney was like "we don't hate our gay employees."
