With the death of Chris Cornell I've been listening to all kinds of his music. It's funny how something like this not only takes me way back, but caused me to go home last night and dig through my CD's. I found shit in there I forgot I had. It was like a walk through time. If you went and did what I did, through an old box or catalog, file, whatever and took your walk through time what would be the most shameful find and what would be the one that made your day? Shameful for me: Taylor Dayne Tell It To My Heart The one that made my day: Primus They All Can't Be Zingers
Shameful: Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw....I have no good unembarrassing explanation. Most shameful thing ever: Used to like Kelly Clarkson, yes, its true.
The first song I ever downloaded from Napster was All Star by Smashmouth. The fact that it took hours over dial-up makes it even more embarrassing.
That was probably the biggest single of its entire year. Don't feel THAT bad. The lamest album I ever bought was Harvey Danger. They sucked, their lead singer was an asshole and they were all fucking ugly. Looking through my vinyl here I have YES! !!! Tears For Fears: Song From The Big Chair. There's one of the very best new wave albums from when I was a kid. Here's a few from my bin to make me smile:
I see no apology needed. I was guilty as well. At least it's not The Fixx. Or Human League for that matter.
I think Orgy's CandyAss is my most shameful CD. I remember loving it and playing it non stop in middle school. Like a few other bands from that era of my life, god they sucked once I relistened to it post high school. I can't imagine being a grown ass musician making whiny teen angst butt rock. I think any of the Cake albums I have can make me smile. Dude is just a gifted quirky song writer, blends country, alt rock, jazz, into little stand alone diddies.
Imagine a wildly satirical comedy skit from 23 years ago becoming the stone-cold reality we live in today:
It's embarrassing to think that we used to drive around with the windows down and blasting that shit for everyone to hear... thinking we were so cool because "me so horny".
I still listen to Dixie Chicks. Kiss my country ass. That was right after they made fun of Bush, before it was cool to make fun of Bush, and they got blackballed from radio for it. They never recovered. But no, motherfuckers, they still aren't ready to make nice.
Think about how Mark Emery got in serious shit for selling that album at City Lights. To think that album, for a brief moment, was the ne plus ultra of risqué music. And I liked Fuck Martinez.
I was out on tour with them for a few shows during Lilith Fair, and they are REALLY nice and cool people... and you just cannot fathom what amazing musicians they are. Always been a fan, and couldn't give two shits about any political bullshit that went on.
I am honored to E-know someone who met them. One of the best documentaries I have ever seen. To this day I still begin every run listening to "Taking the Long Way" (brain tumor implications being obvious). Their music was very inspiring for me for a very long time, and still is in a lot of ways. To see them play with Beyonce at the 2016 CMAs was a real treat.
What a fitting thread topic, because I literally was boxing up what was left of my CD collection a few days ago in preparation for my move. There were two CDs that stood out from all the rock, metal, and country: 1) "Elegantly Wasted" by INXS. In my defense, I was really high when I bought this. 2) "Songs for Jane" by fucking Maroon 5. In my defense, it was a loan from a girl I was seeing about 15 years ago. She wanted me to listen to it. Unfortunately, I did listen to it. We broke things off a little while later, and she never took the CD back. I'd forgotten I even had it.
