Fuck yeah. I don’t think I have ever felt as much tension in any TV show as I do any time Homelander is on screen with a non-super.
Easily the most frightening and unpredictable TV character since the Trinity Killer. And to think his last role was as the PTSD-soaked antihero on “Banshee”. In a complete fantasy setting, he gives the most realistic sociopath performance there is.
Arguably this is the best show currently on TV. The writing and world-building is phenomenal, it is so much more than just an “alternative superhero” number (specially since it was created before the latest craze) but it’s still overshadowed by Homelander’s absolute sociopathy. Jesus CHRIST. Only three episodes deep and he is the most terrifying and sadistic character there is. Fuck the Joker, Anthony Starr has been given an actor’s dream role here. They just keep upping the dark ante with him and there is still so much to go. Love it.
Karl Urban is drastically underrated as an actor, I think. He is so convincing in just about every role he has... from McCoy in the new Star Trek... to Dredd... to his role in Red... I also really enjoyed his short-lived sci-fi TV show, Almost Human.
I just started watching season 3. My mom was bored, wanted to watch it with me... but I convinced her that it wasn't really her thing. HOLY SHIT... that first episode beginning. lol
I like any genre actor that never phones it in, but he’s definitely a guy in particular who’s presence constantly improves something. He has no ego bringing him down, he’s a good-looking, mean-looking motherfucker.
He just has an intimidating presence that Bernthal just couldn't quite pull off no matter how much he growled or yelled. That aside, The Boys is better than basically any other superhero media out there currently. Based on the success of that show and Peacemaker, the public seems to prefer the postmodern/metamodern version of the genre now. I have seen maybe one of the Phase 4 MCU movies since Endgame.
I’m now all caught up. This season is so good, but what the fuck did Erin Moriarty do to her face? That plastic surgery was completely unnecessary. That aside, Spoiler: Comic Spoilers I wonder where they are going to go with Black Noir since they made it pretty clear he’s not going to be Homelander’s clone like in the comics. I get that Soldier Boy is kind of filling that role, but it’s a pretty pivotal part of what that character is. Also, I’m on board with the theory that Butcher eventually becomes the real villain.
If Black Noir is still the guy that was Edgar’s brother/right hand in the flashback, it doesn’t make sense that he’s helping Homelander’s right now. Something is going on that’s not being explained. That hole aside, Homelander is doing EXACTLY what a reader of the comic wants him to be doing. Let the downward spiral begin.
Think i am one ep behind, never liked a-train, but thought maybe, just maybe he would have some sort of redemption arc ... nope.
Eh, they're kinda trying in the latest episode and people online are losing their minds after one specific scene. Because apparently nobody before this realized that The Boys is not just a superhero show but also a political commentary show.
I don’t think you will see a redemption arc from him because I don’t think he has suffered enough from tokening himself. He’s trying to be Tim Scott but he’s only being looked at like Samuel L. Jackson in Django unchained. The sycophancy of the 7 falling in behind Homelander no matter what in hopes of it benefiting them personally is such an on-the-nose metaphor for Trumpism. He will only realize his mistake once it’s too late. But I haven’t read the comics either, so I don’t know what will actually happen.
It’s probably safe to read the comics at this point because of how different they are. The comics are, like Preacher, monumentally extreme and insane, but the show adds dimensions to basically every character that the source doesn’t have. Butcher, Hughie, Homelander, Maeve, Deep, A-Train have so many more layers added to them now, the latter two are ENTIRELY different from the comic in better ways. The Deep is basically Meg Griffin now. He takes the hardest L’s a character can take.
