In the short term, Nord Stream 2 gets shut down very quickly. That is the only sanction Russia would actually care about and the only reason Putin made a presence at the Olympics is because they would need Chinese support in the event of a rapid economic decline. In the medium term, Russia had around 10,000 casualties over 10 years from fighting over Chechnya. That same number is estimated to be the daily casualty rate between both sides in a war against Ukraine. The Chechen wars caused a lot of social unrest in Russia, so it’s going to accelerate that and capital flight very quickly. A shut down of Nord Stream 2 would prevent Russia from delivering its main export to its main customers and further crash their economy. The real reason Russia is doing this is not really to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO, at least not directly. It’s to exert influence and veto authority in Ukrainian government policy via eastern Ukraine, essentially doing what they do in Georgia. The delivery of military equipment from NATO makes it worse for Russia with every passing day, so that is why it’s speeding up. The second reason is better shipping access to the Black Sea. Odessa and Sevastopol in particular are deep water ports that don’t have inherent icing issues. Ukraine also has far more arable land. Longer term, civil unrest will lead to competing political factions in Russia and the outcome could be a very destructive Russian civil war. Bottom line is, even a senile Joe Biden is not dumb enough to get directly involved which could trigger WWIII. Russia will probably conquer most of eastern Ukraine, if not the whole country, in weeks or months, but it’s probably going to destroy their economy for decades. Currently, though, no field hospitals or weapons depots have popped up on the Russian border, so that’s good. When that happens, shit will probably hit the fan shortly thereafter.
