Hey guys, I've never really given hip hop much of a chance (I was one of those "OH RAP ISNT MUSIC" assholes for a long time) and I really want to give myself a shot at the genre.

I want to break in with maybe 4-5 albums, I don't want to get 20 reccomendations and not remember / distinguish them because it's so much new content for me

I'm kind of looking for two different 'styles':
1: Aggressive, fast paced, potentially angry rap. This is mostly a throwback to when I listened to nu-metal so it has some nostalgic comfort. A good example that I've heard kind of recently is something like P.O.S's track The Brave and the Snake.
2: Something chill, laid back, but still well written and complex. I'm not looking for RnB though, I don't want some soulful vocals, I'm still looking for rap at its core. Just more laid back 'chill' rap. I can't really explain well because I'm shitty at defining a genre I've ignored for the past decade outside of a few Roots songs and a POS album

    Two other questions -
Is Frank Ocean any good? Outside of the fact he's gay and I ran into a lot of fans at Lolla I don't know much about him, but I've heard lots of noise and might also give him a go

Also is there a good Snoop Dogg album to check out or is he just more of a gimmick? Honestly he makes me laugh, and I'm kind of curious what his music is actually like (all I've heard of him is Still DRE)

    Illmatic - Nas
    Enter the 36 Chambers - Wu-Tang Clan
    Reasonable Doubt - Jay-z
Paid in Full - Eric B & Rakim
    Ready to Die - Biggie

Start from there. I might have a bit of an east coast bias...

Which is why you should throw in some west coast.
    Doggy Style - Snoop Dogg
    All Eyez Me - 2pac
    Black Sunday - Cypress Hill

I would check out some AZ if I were you too. I've been listening to Aziatic and AWOL a bit recently.

Also, this dude from Brooklyn called O.C. just came out with a solid album called Trophies. I would highly recommend that to everyone.

Machine Gun Kelly just dropped an album. I remember seeing random videos of him online and writing this dude off just because he looks like a poser (Mac Miller syndrome) but I heard a couple of songs and i've been hooked. Great flow. If you are into stuff like Tech N9ne you should like this.

So we're introducing somebody to Rap, and no one mentions Kweli & Mos Def? Blackstar and Black on Both Sides will serve you right, if you're looking for lyrical prowess with a purpose. But really, what level of education do you seek? How deep down the rabbit hole do you really wish to go? Or are you just looking for some new background music?

Chris Brown ruins the beginning of the song, but Banner and Rocky kill this shit.

What a great fucking album. For me, an album rarely lives up to the hype but dear God. This one does.

I'm about halfway through listening to good kid, m.a.a.d city and I'm absolutely loving it so far. It's still strange I saw him perform this past summer at Pitchfork and no one really knew who the hell he was. He's about to blow up with this album.

One of my favorite tracks so far:

+1 on the Kendrick Lamar love. This album has everything. Here's the flipside sound from the previous post:

Holy fuck, Jay Rock's verse on Money Trees stole the entire album for me.

Finally got around to listening to this, halfway through. No idea why I waited so long. It's not that any song carries the album, but the overall consistency and quality is undeniable. I can tell I'm going to be bumping this album until I know every song by heart. Fucking quality.

Don't forget to get a hold of Roc Marciano's new album Reloaded. It's more of the same from Marci, aka more old school east coast perfection.

I fucking love his eyes half shut, monotone flow.

I love when J. Cole spits with his raw conviction over an uptempo beat.

Chief Keef finally has an album out. I'm conflicted between curiosity and an urge to refuse to acknowledge him out of spite.

No, just no. If that "Don't Like" single irritates me that much, I can only imagine what the rest of his material consists of.
