    Happy Friday!

Today I didn’t have much to do with work so did some cooking.

Made a killer beef broth with some roasted beef bones, some beef scraps, some nice marrow filled soup bones, etc.

I had 3 big bags of onions that I hadn’t been going through all that quickly, so sliced them all up and caramelized the shit out of them.

Then added some nice stewing beef and cut up pork shoulder, and some barley.

One of the best soups I’ve made in a very long time.

Colder damp weather, bottle of red, and soup. Perfect.

Nice! It is definitely soup weather.

I made soup this morning, too. Some tom kha gai. So freaking good. I brought the pot to share with our homeschool outdoors club that I head up. After our hike/meander at the state park, we went back to a friend's house for a backyard playdate and soup. She made chili, I brought the coconut soup, and everyone else brought snacks to share. I have been collaborating with some other homeschool people in the area and Fridays are our social day. We either do a hike, a playdate, a field trip, a roller rink day, whatever.

Next up, lamb curry. Better go get some out of the freezer now while I'm thinking about it.

TGIF y'all. Stay warm and have a great Friday.

Might be fire pit night soon....

Smoked a turkey(27lbs) on the weekend and made turkey soup this week. I let the bones simmer for about half a day, so by the time it is done and cools, the broth is like jelly. So much flavour.

    Nice.

Smoked turkey is such an amazing base for a soup... so much depth of flavour.

    Nice.

Usually Friday's are "no cook because I'm fucking tired from a long week of work" night, so I'd normally be right there with you, flipping through Uber Eats for something to eat.

This week, though, I'm in limbo at work, with nothing to do but play video games, so spending the day prepping a killer soup for dinner was nice and relaxing.

I had a Eggo waffle for dinner. After I accidentally dropped it on the floor.

I had my third omelette and keto-friendly bagel combination for dinner this week. I do most of the cooking and it’s just my wife and I most nights. I find cooking for two kind of difficult. So when it’s just me I go with what’s fast and easy.

Mom flew home from a cruise today.

She disembarked in San Diego this morning.

It was really fucking interesting getting to the airport, seeing as the No Kings protest was going on

The blue hull ship was hers.

Had ground beef nachos on Friday night and steak last night. Can't remember the last time I had beef on back to back nights.

I mean there wasn't a king when I woke up this morning, so I guess "mission accomplished?"

I drove to DFW this weekend with Li'l Bandit and Jungle Julia to attend a small memorial service for my brother.

It was a helacious drive on the way up; bumper to bumper traffic from San Marcos until the outskirts of Dallas, where the traffic cleared up, oddly enough.

I didn't really care about any sort of ceremony for my brother, but I wanted JJ and Li'l Bandit to meet some of my family, and I wanted to get to talk with my niece. I used to help her out with money/ school stuff/ transportation when my brother was in prison.

Everything went well, and everyone was charmed by JJ, but GOD DAMN did my niece get fat. She is legit morbidly obese. She was always kinda chubby growing up, but now she's almost as wide as she is tall.
I'm not saying this to be mean; I really feel bad that has happened. Her mom is the same way, and I was really hoping that my niece would escape that fate.

Anyway, I was disappointed that my cousin's son wasn't there; he's the same age as Li'l Bandit, and I wanted to see how the two of them would get along.

    Good trip, all in all.
