The far-fetched theory I've read is that Trump is planning to step down after the midterms due to "medical reasons," likely to try and avoid prosecution. It would also let him run for a 3rd term legally.

    wait what?

So, if you don't do a full term it doesn't count?

    That sounds like complete bullshit.

I much rather he not do a full term because he was in jail or had a bullet in his head, but I think that goes without saying.

That's because it is. The 22nd Amendment is very clear that no person can be elected to the office of President more than twice. Some idiot probably got it confused with the possibility that a VP who takes over a Presidential term with less than two years left can themselves be elected twice, theoretically serving for just under 10 years total. If the term has more than 2 years left, then they can only be elected once.

You can legally serve for 10 years, not 8. If a president dies or becomes incapacitated a day (or more) less than 2 years after the second anniversary of inauguration, the VP serves out the remaining two years but is also eligible to serve 2 full terms.

If a President leaves before their second anniversary, they can also serve 2 more full terms if he became a VP and then dropped (I'm pretty sure it can work in reverse).

Edit: Nvm, didn't realize the 12th Amendment then kicks in.

Trump will never step down. His narcissism and ego won't let him
