And I thought it was bad when a hurricane took out US-East-1 back in the day.

Yup, guess the are trying to transfer from backup to the German AWS and the first attempt failed, they said they are going to be trying again and the transfer will take 2 days and another 3 days for the backups to be up and running. So minimum of 5 days if they can get the transfer to work.

I’m currently building out a multi-region/cloud infrastructure for our new cloud services.

Thankfully 99% of the critical data starts with our clients’ code/asset repositories and can be rebuilt from their sources if need be.

    I feel for you dude.

I also don’t want to tell you how much cash I made telling fortune 50 companies that their backups didn’t work for them.

Shocking concept… your backups aren’t working until you effectively recover from them. And do it regularly to ensure they keep working.

Half of my income from my side consulting gig is teaching teams what "immutable" actually means. When they don't want to pay for it, I tell them what a ransomware attack actually means.

For twice as much, I'll teach them what "idempotent" is.

I also consulted on many a CQRS system that was improperly implemented for many reasons, including failed idempotence.

I was enjoying my morning coffee and scrolling while I woke up. Across my feed came a post meant to stir shit up between two types of people. It was a "debate" on whether a Texas teenager's 25 year sentence was excessive or not. So you can imagine who was jumping in the comments to get their word in.

One person said it was not excessive. There were people that agreed and people that disagreed. I came upon a comment threatening the guy's daughter and seemingly asking for confirmation of when the guy has to go to work. I screenshot the comment.

I went and googled his name. Not something I normally do when getting my entertainment from Facebook. I guess I just had a feeling about this one. There he was, a violent criminal that crashed his own vehicle into his girlfriend's, and then kidnapped her 4 year old child.

I think I've found new way to entertain myself. Find the criminal record of the people acting criminally in comments.

Tell me you didn't just stop there, and that you contacted your local law enforcement.

I put together a nice little package of screenshots, Inmate search results and news articles. I sent all of it to the sheriff's office that originally arrested him for the kidnapping. I also sent it to the guy that was threatened, so he could take whatever steps he felt necessary to protect his family.

I just checked back again. The idiot finally deleted the threatening comment. It was up from about 6am eastern time, til sometime after 12pm. Hopefully law enforcement does something. People, especially those like him, need to be reminded that the rest of us don't want to live amongst people that can't be decent human beings.

Go to prison, get rehabilitated, get out and make something of themselves. I'm all for that, love a good redemption arc. Get out, get in trouble again, they can fucking stay there for life for all I care.
