I'm not going to say meteorites to anyone beyond this thread and my wife. Just tell the insurance company I have damage and see what they do. I just can't deduce anything other than space debris. I'd be interested in hearing what a pro roofer has to say.

wait so that’s actually what we’re going with?

Have you checked local reports to see if there was anything that made the news? Or maybe called around to roofing places to ask them if they’ve heard of anything which you can then relay to insurance as the actual cause?

I'm still not certain. I've looked up hail damage photos, this doesn't quite match those and doesn't explain going all the way through and very deep on some other penetrations. I guess I could go dig through the insulation under the hole, see if there is anything there.

Either way, I'm not saying meteorites to the insurance company, and if they deny it because they think it is meteorites and I'm not covered for meteorites, I'm going to call them fucking crazy for even suggesting such a silly notion and tell them I'll see them in court.

I'm going to go see a roofer with my pics first and see what they think and how they think insurance company may react.

The one that penetrated, what did the interior of the hole look like? That could give some clues to what made the hole.

also, this wiki page has a photo of an example of a meteorite hitting a shingle on a house

I already picked the kid up from school, it might be next week before I can get up in the "attic" space and investigate. I just know I could stick those tweezers all the way thru the roof.

this would be what I'd do. That way they know that if they are helpful, you might remember them when it comes time for those costly repairs with your new-found insurance money.

Yeah, I'll be up front with them about being covered by USAA, see if they have dealt with them in the past. See if I can get a feel for how this is going to go, they'll be the ones with all the experience. I'll tell them I want to take this opportunity to upgrade to a metal roof, if possible, which would lower my premium with USAA also. My shingles are only supposed to be 6 years old, it's not like I'm trying to get a 17 year old roof replaced for free. If I can't go metal, I'll have them put another layer of architectural shingles on and do it when those wear out.

We got the spray foam insulation done on a section of our attic and a crawlspace under about 1/3 of our home today:

    Attic:

    Crawlspace:

    Screen Shot 2021-10-06 at 7.49.49 PM.png

This gives us an R-21 value on those sections and I can't wait to see the difference it makes. Especially on our bedroom floor which has always been ice cold in Winter time.

I thought it a little strange they sprayed over the two small vents on either end of the attic, so I asked the guy as they were leaving. He said I could cut that section out, but that kind of defeats the purpose of the spray foam. He said the closed cell stuff doesn't need to "breathe" like regular insulation. At any rate it's cool, since there's a ridge vent. Also, our attic is kind of partitioned, with this being the only usable space, and those other parts have as well as ventilation still.

CA to ban gas-powered lawn equipment. (Eventually. By Jan.1 2024 or earlier if feasible.)

The politics angle is something for a different thread obviously, but I was talking with some buddies today about this and it's something I've really been wondering about:

do y'all think that battery or corded lawn equipment -- mowers, blowers, trimmers, chainsaws, pressure washers, etc. -- will ever be, costs being equal, a direct 1:1 replacement for gas powered?

I HATE messing with gas engines. I just do. There's a local QT that sells the ethanol free gas for my mix can, but it still seems like I'm always fucking with the carbs. So I've slowly been switching to mainly corded. I want it to start when I need it to, because my time is valuable and I'm impatient. But the moment my john deere riding mower, stihl backpack blower, or stihl trimmer dies I'm buying a new one. They're that excellent, bar none. I feel like nothing can replace them, or even come close. My corded greenworks pressure washer, on the other hand, is amazing, as are my two corded pole saws.

I just don't see battery or corded power tools ever achieving the power necessary for some tasks, and for that reason, I'm not sure we can ever transition to a complete electric yard care system of tools, outside of small and occasional maintenance tasks.

    what say y'all?

I have all the current Stihl battery operated lawn equipment: lawn mower, leaf blower, hedge trimmer, weed whacker. All take the same batteries, and all WAY outperform the gas equivalent.

I can cut a fucking grass field that has overgrown for a month with ZERO problems or hesitation... the electric motor just fucking mows through it with insane torque that would bog down a gas powered mower.

I switched to 100% electric 2 years ago and regret nothing.

Stihl is still the leader in that battery technology, from what I can see.

    HIGHLY recommend.

Lets add some context, CA is looking to ban the sale of gas powered lawn tools by 1 January 2024. Thats very different than an outright ban.

As Nett and you have stated, many electric lawn tools outperform gas powered. No ICE engine can compete with the level of, or near instantaneous torque an electric motor can produce. I updated to DeWalt's trimmer and leaf blower because their lawn tools are compatible with the batteries used in their cordless power tools I already own and I didn't want to deal with multiple chargers and battery systems. When my gas mower finally dies, or I ge sick of fucking with gas/oil, etc., it'll get replaced with a battery powered mower.

also the actual ban of ownership is 2035. So it's not a political thing as much as I'm just curious what can compete, and how closely it can approximate it. If I can still get the job done without the emissions, then I'm all for it! I've been eyeing those Stihl battery powered chainsaws nett mentioned for a bit and that might well be my xmas gift to myself. I'm also curious if I can run my solar generator to charge the batteries, making it a true green energy source.

I have one huge issue with battery powered yard tools that I’ve already encountered with my weed trimmer ( and my cordless drill for that matter) - the batteries on these seem to last 3-5 years. When you attempt to replace them you find out that they’ve upgraded the batteries and/or the motors on their line of trimmers and what you need is no longer available. Time to buy a new trimmer.

Putting out 70-150 bucks on a new trimmer is bad enough but I’ll be damned if I’m buying a new lawnmower every 5 years. A maintained gas lawnmower can last damn near forever.

I have yet to find that with Stihl. I think they're really thinking long term with this stuff, as they want the pros to use them.

Been looking at something like a Powerwall, and ran across this... it's pretty interesting. Basically a software configured electrical panel with usage insights.

It's the interior of a drum composter my wife decided she wanted and assembled herself.

You are correct! Guess how I spent my morning today
