Highly recommend The Boys which is a Netflix original of a comic book series turned TV show. We are enjoying this show for now but there is only a single season out currently. It's a comic series written by someone who hates superheroes. Definitely a fun spin on the idea of a hero mixed with negative elements of corporate America. We are about 75% through season 1 but I was hooked from episode 1. A very fun watch.
Agreed. It gets away from the graphic novels, but in a good way. The ending of season 1 is amazing. Glad it was already renewed for season 2.
Ennis is a weird one. His hatred of Superheroes is complicated since he doesn't necessarily hate them, but more the fact that they've unintentionally suffocated the medium amongst other issues. Ironically enough, two of his favorite fictional characters are Superman and Wonder Woman whom he ALWAYS writes respectfully. As for recs, I've not personally watched it, but I have had Umbrella Academy recommended to me a good few times and its trailer is an incredibly good sell.
The Boys is far superior to Umbrella Academy. It’s the most perfect show for the current state of entertainment, and every single character is amazing and richly detailed. But it details superheroes completely honestly: if we had these powers, there is no way you could keep using them honestly. And power corrupts. Might be the best best new show of this year. Funny, wildly unpredictable, and just plain D-A-R-K. Holy shit, does this show tap a very sick vein more than once. It does not give a fuck. Watchmen and Robocop would be the closest influences here. I love the idea of superheroes having agents, being pushed around by suits and acting like lazy, spoiled bullies on a horrifying scale.
Good fucking God. I was about 75% through when I recommended it before. We finished the 1st season. Holy dark. I was physically uncomfortable towards the end. The characters are so rich and complicated. If you have time and are looking for the show, I big time recommend you take a look at The Boys.
Spinning this off into a separate thread. There have been so many characterizations of sociopaths on TV since The Sopranos that they become pretty unbelievable. Spoiler Homelander at the end of Season 1 is the one of the first ones since Walter White that I actually buy it. Jesus Christ, that last scene was absolutely whack.
Antony Starr is so fucking terrifying in the role. He was Lucas on “Banshee” so the guy is already a pro at playing an unstable mess. THAT is the absolute pinnacle on how you end a season. One of the best ones since Dexter season 4. Everybody is already foaming at the mouth for a season two so this show has definetly put Amazon on the TV map.
Amazon pulled it, because it was too explicit. Gah, you can't even split a head open anymore without people getting upset.
I hope they keep the running joke of making The Deep taking horrific and hilarious L’s everywhere he turns. He’s a live action Meg Griffin. What’s crazy is last year’s final scene completely destroyed the central narrative of the comic. Now the viewers AND the readers don’t know where the story is going.
Phew. They just pulled the trailer. I quickly googled that to make sure it wasn't the whole show that was pulled. I need season 2 in my life!
Yeah... the comic Stormfront is an aptly-named male Nazi with powers close to Homelander. Here it’s a pretentious female from Portland. Basically the mirror image of the comic character. So far they’ve done well with altering things. We’ll see. Knowing the source material and how psychopathically evil it gets, I doubt this show is trying to post any message. I expect it will tell simply tell it’s story. I wonder if they’ll keep The Deep going as the Ben Stiller of the show. He took some incredible L’s last season.
