The US coronavirus patients are being evacuated to one of the military hospitals by where I live. I know quite a few people who work in those hospitals and there is absolutely no safer place for both the patients, as well as the general population.

Of course that's doesn't stop the idiots from freaking out thinking all of Texas is gonna get sick now. Not a doubt in my mind that they'll receive the best care available, and I'm even more confident that it will be contained there. Under normal conditions, security on those bases doesn't fuck around. Now it looks like if you have so much as a cough you won't be allowed on base. Which is gonna be funny with allergy season when everyone and their dog is coughing up a lung.

I’m leaving on a cruise late next week (horray for company trips!!). They said if you’ve had so much as a fever in the last 2 weeks you can’t board. Don’t know how they’ll enforce that, but suffice to say I’ll make sure not to cough going through security

Isn't this more like an in-case-shit-hit-the-fan type thing? They're just asking them to get prepared. Better to build the infrastructure now than be caught with your fist up your ass when it gets bad in a hurry.

It seems like the fatality rate is only 2%, but it's contagious as all fuck. If it were allowed to spread, "only 2%" could be over 70 million dead.

Jungle Julia has really been keeping up with this disease, and based on the reports being leaked from China, there are about 1,000 people a day dying in Wuhan alone; this number is based on the number of crematoriums in the city, multiplied by the number of bodies they can handle (they're running at full capacity).

I GUARANTEE there will be mass graves before all of this is over.

So is anyone else actually starting to become concerned about this? It doesnt seem like its getting any better. Regardless if there is a major outbreak in the US/Canada, there could still be a large impact on natural resources and commercial shipping, which means more expensive gas and food.

In terms of numbers, it still pales in comparison to seasonal flu outbreaks. So the concern is probably not rational in that sense, but who knows.

It's getting serious with my clients in Japan, who are a huge global company with tens of thousands of employees... half of them are now working from home, the other half are on a forced split schedule to try and commute when there's less transit density, they've cancelled all personal and business travel at the company, they are testing the air quality every day in every office, and they are proactively testing individuals for the virus with in-office triage centres.

They also announced today the first case of the Corona virus re-infecting someone in Japan.

    https://news-sky-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/coronavirus-japan-confirms-first-case-of-person-being-reinfected-with-covid-19-11944295?usqp=mq331AQFKAGwASA=&amp_js_v=0.1

Meanwhile, the scariest part is the US handling of it, from a political sense.

Not meaning to leak the Politics thread too much, but, you have Trump who is making retarded comments about the situation, Pence is now in charge of the official response plan, and you have an HHS (Health and Human Services) Secretary who is an ex-pharma CEO who is refusing to promise access to all, not just the rich, to virus vaccine that is being developed with taxpayer money. Oh, yeah, and Trump axed the Pandemic response team 2 years ago without replacing them, so there's that. And they cut huge funds from the CDC that were earmarked for exactly this kind of global prevention. On top of that, it sounds like the testing for Corona is crazy expensive if you want it done.

And the mortality rates are creeping up to SARS levels, and it's looking like it's not just the old and weak that are at risk any more.

I'm not CNN "everyone's going to die so watch Wolf in his Danger Room" panicky about it, but I think it's something that shouldn't be outright ignored at this point.

I had a work colleague who went to Tokyo with me who has been sick for the past week, and when he went into the local clinic they immediately sent him to the local hospital ER, where they did an immediate test, sent him home with instructions, where he self-quarantined for a few days until he got the call back that he was fine, it was just a shitty cold/flu that was lasting a bit longer.

I'm pretty impressed to see that the Canadian healthcare systems are as on the ball as they are and are implementing reasonable infectious disease protocols without any fucking around.

My wife, a very well educated nurse, voiced concern about this a couple of days ago. Very unlike her, normally she'd be rolling her eyes at the news reports but her response this time around... well, it's got me more concerned now.

There is what seems to be a run on face masks right now. I was at the hardware store yesterday and even they're getting constant phone calls, people coming in and asking for them. And the owner said once he's out, that's it, he can't get any more.

Thats essentially what got me concerned about it too. My wife is also a nurse who has colleagues that work in the Mass General Infectious Diseases Division. She came home after meeting up for drinks with them and suggested it might be time for us to start lightly stocking up a bit. We dont need to go full prepper mode, but things like batteries, OTC meds, etc.. Things that would use over time anyway but just buying in bulk up front. I was shooketh.

Yeah, needless to say I'm doing a Costco run this afternoon and am putting a few extra items on the list as a bit of a reasonable precaution.

They’ve always been good at it. They Did it with SATS, they did it with H1N1 (which my daughter caught that lucky little minx) there is no lack of training or misinformation to be had. They take their advice from the smart people and not greedy fucks with an agenda.

We should all be doing this anyway, it used to be a common thing 60+ years ago. You planned ahead a little. Now people think you're a survivalist weirdo.

I've kept a lot of extra stuff we commonly use in the basement for years now. We take from it, we replace what we used, and inventory is always fresh. When things like coffee are on sale, I buy a few extra.

Look around your house and think about what comes from or is made up largely from things that come from China or Korea. That's the shit that could end up in short supply. You don't have to buy a gross of it ( I've never been in favor of stockpiling anyway ) but if disruptions occur you're not standing in line with a bunch of potentially sick people. Best case scenario, it blows over and you have a little extra stuff on hand to use.
