    http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledgebase/.300+Weatherby+Magnum.html

I got a steal on a .300 weatherby mag. I was shopping for a deer rifle at Gander mountain when someone brought the thing in to sell. Knowing GM wasn't going to give him shit for it, I told the guy I'd give $25 more than their offer out in the parking lot.

I didn't know much about that cartridge when I bought it. I looked for the ammo, finally found it in the 'safari' section at GM. I didn't know they were $2+ a round. I didn't know it wasn't a gun I wanted shoot from a tree stand. I hadn't yet heard the term 'Weatherby eyebrow'.

I sold it after a few rounds. It never got my eyebrow but it was inappropriate for the hunting I would be doing.

What was your first clue that it wasn't for deer hunting, would that be 300 and magnum ?

The clues came in the following order.

1- the ammo was in the safari section beneath a picture of a water buffalo.

    I still wasn't convinced...

2- The size if the cartridge.

    Still not convinced...

    3- The recoil.

That's when I decided I didn't want to shoot it from a tiny stand chained to a tree.

...and heeere we go! These were finally machine carved based on the pattern stocks I made last year (guy I sent them to is up to his neck in work), and a nice bonus is how I can get a machined copy of either of these stocks again whenever I want because I still have those patterns.

If you think that grain looks nice now, just wait 'til it is sanded and finished. Ohhh lordy.

I also have the scrap pieces that were cut off the blanks to start, so I can make knife handles and pistol grips with wood matching these stocks in the future. I want to start learning knife making within the decade, to me it makes sense. What could pair better with a custom hunting rifle than a custom knife paired to its intended use?

Yes. 2.2 miles is just incredible.
They left out one skill in that list and that's that sniper's special instinct, knowing when to shoot. With this .50 bmg round,

you only get one chance, I would imagine. If you miss, the jig is up.

Has this shot been refuted by the FES people yet?

The sniper was not alone, he had an equally skilled spotter that we need to include in this too.

Go to https://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ and see what is 2.2 miles from you. Mind-blowing!!

I would LOVE to know the mechanics of that shot.

Apparently he was in a high rise, so that probably helped with the holdover... but holy shit... it took 8.2 seconds for the shot to make it, and had something like a 750 foot drop.

I would love to see the scope cam from that shot, or watch a behind-the-scenes view of that. I honestly can't think about even where to start with pulling that off. It's like firing a mortar.

Furthest I've ever sent a bullet is 800 yards, almost half a mile, I have no idea how you begin to push past a mile (okay beyond the obvious aim high and watch the wind). I want to know what kind of scope they had.

Count eight seconds out loud. Unreal.

And, the target didn't move their head or chest for 8.2 seconds? What are the ways the shooter knows that's going to be true? Target is asleep, so the shot was at night? Target is getting a blowjob, so they had help from a hooker? Yeah, watching TV or a movie, you're likely to be relatively stationary, but still. One opportunity.

They did it in front of their 3 year old. Add some child endangerment charges to the second degree manslaughter. That's going to have some legal ramifications on where the unborn child ends up. Damn shame. As Nett likes to remind people on here, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

They thought a book would stop a .50-caliber round? Jesus Christ.

The article says that he tried it before on other books and they didn't go through... I would love to see the details around that.

"Well, this 9mm didn't go through the encyclopedia, so this .50 Desert Eagle will be just the same!"

Based on the aunt that raised him, this isn't a big surprise... sounds like he was going to "here, hold my beer" himself to death at some point... just sucks that the girlfriend and kid were involved.
