Sorry for the abrupt title, kinda. Let's get to the point. It's abrupt. That's the point:

Tonight an in-law was cooking steaks (while drunk out of his mind) and since he didn't know when they were "done," I showed him the finger to thumb trick. You know the drill. I could explain it but this quick video illustrates it better.

Viola! You can still be ass over tit and cook a damn good steak just by fingering your palm.

Focus: Quick tips, tricks, what have you on making complicated shit easy.

Alt. Focus: What's complicated to you that you want an easy answer to? Ask questions. We'll either provide answers or mock you.

It drives me bonkers when someone cuts into a steak to check it.

For god sake, if you have to change a car tire, put the emergency brake on.

Also, if you have a herb garden and bugs are getting at it, spray the herbs (usually basil) with a light mixture of vinegar and water or sprinkle black pepper on it.

Don't put the little donut tire on the front. If you have a flat on the front, you get to change 2 tires, put a rear on the front and the donut on the rear.

While not easier, it is much safer.

Investing - Rule of 72: If you divide 72 by an interest rate, the resulting number is roughly the time it will take an investment to double in value. Ex. 100k invested at 8% is 9 years to double.
Speeding: If you're often driving too fast, just use cruise control and take your foot off the gas.
Outdoors/Camping: Treat the clothes you're going to wear in premethrin to kill bugs. Just remember that until the chemical is dry it will seriously fuck up or kill your pets so spray and hang outside to dry and keep them inside. Also, not great for you either while wet. Totally fine while dry.

Correction: If your car/truck is rear wheel drive, AND has a posi-track/limited slip differential, DO NOT PUT THE DONUT ON THE REAR.
The tires will be turning at different speeds, and you will burn up the clutches in your posi. You can still drive the car, it just won't lock the rear wheels anymore.

Better yet, just get a full-size spare tire.

I've got a shit-ton of automotive advice that I wish my customers would follow, but I don't want to hijack the thread; I'll provide more if y'all want.

About how much time does your diff have? My car is full-time AWD and doesn't (I think) have a full-size spare. But it does have one, so it leads me to believe it can handle being on the car for at least some distance.

The spare will be the same diameter as the normal wheels/tires, just thinner to fit in the trunk. It won't do fuck all to the diff.

it's not like you'd put a 14" donut on a car that runs 18" wheels normally or it wouldn't work.

We got some hunters on this board. Skinning animals sucks. Golf balls (or just a rock and a rope) makes it not suck. Tie the animal up in the tree with some paracord, wrap a fistfull of its hide around a rock, tie that to another rope and hook it up to your truck, gator, 4 wheeler, whatever. Punch the gas and skin the critter.

Nett, I don't know what vehicles you've been driving, but the donut spares on almost every car I've ever seen are smaller in every way.

Here's the OEM donut spare next to the rear tire of my Grand Marquis (I got a full-size wheel/tire from a junkyard when I put a posi in that car, just like I did when I put a posi in my Pontiac, which was also a smaller diameter than the regular tire.).

This advice was given to me by a mechanic I knew who specialized in differentials, and had been doing that work longer than I'd been alive; I'm inclined to believe him. What would he have to gain by lying to me?

EDIT: I just realized that is says in the owner's manual to NOT run dissimilar tire sizes when you have a limited-slip differential:

That's weird. My mom's donut is the same diameter as her normal tires (found out the hard way last week thanks to a nail on the highway).

If your donut isn't the same diameter you are absolutely correct. But it makes me wonder if the donut wasn't swapped out... makes no sense that the factory would provide a wrong sized spare that would blow up the powertrain.

I would assume the factory spare wouldn't kill the drive axles of the car in which it was provided. Dixie's undersized spares would probably be fine on the drive axles until HE modified them to posi. A good modification, Dixie.

I was really referring to the little wheelbarrow-like tires that come in most front wheel drive, compact cars. They're, what, about 3 inches wide? You don't want that on a steering axle.

You should probably do what your owners' manual says, by I would call a tow if I had to use one of those little tires to control my car.

AAA costs $100/year and includes some free towing (I think 100 miles).

    Worth it, every Goddamn time.

I know AAA lost money on me. When I had my truck I always maxed out the free tows. Awesome investment.

One day my truck was screwed again, my membership was out of date, I called them and re-upped it then, a half hour later they were getting me a tow.

Ruxin maxed his out on The League, using them as his designated driver. That way he got his car and himself home safely.

If you have a shitty car that may break down, AAA is a necessity and a huge money saver

If you spill a candle on carpet or tablecloth, let it dry, then scrape as much of the wax up as you can.

Then cover it with a paper towel or paper bag, and run a warm iron over it to draw the rest of the wax out.

Leave the door of a front loading washer open so it can dry out, that way your laundry room doesn't smell.

You can get roadside assistance through your phone carrier for like $3 a month. SUPER cheap and great service.

I tried this specifically because my basil was getting munched on by something. No other issues with my plants. The vinegar kind of fucked my garden up. Careful with that stuff.

You might have used too much. Its not a 1-for-1, its just enough vinegar where you just start to smell it in the water.

You could be right....I looked at a couple other sites to find out the ratio and it was all like "PUT VINEGAR ON EVERYTHINGGGG" so I said what the hell and probably did about a 1:2 vinegar to water ratio with a little detergent to help it stick to the foliage. My tomatoes are covered in tiny brown spots that they can live with but my basil was totally fucked up. I have more seeds and the new growth will be fine, but....well, I'll just have to show a picture later.

Detergent will destroy the lipids in the vegetables, and breaks down the cells almost immediately. If you did that, i would replace about 6 inches worth of dirt where they were and start fresh.
