Not only does it work like a charm, it lets me make custom controls for the PC games and SNES and N64 roms. Productivity=dead. Well worth the $20 for a used 360 controller to play Doom 64 all day.

I have an iPod with about 80 gigs of music on it, and since reformatting my computer a few months ago, I don't have backups for a good portion of it. Can anyone suggest a good program for ripping the music from my iPod onto my PC (preferably for free)? I've looked on Google, but haven't had much luck finding one for free with no limitations on how much you can rip or that is very easy to use.
    Thanks.

Easiest way takes ten seconds: Set your iPod in iTunes to disk mode. Open up the iPod in explorer, then hit go into View->Folder Options-> Show hidden files and folders. You'll see a hidden folder pop up, I think it's called Music. If not, just click around till you find a bunch of folders named F00, F01, etc. That's all your music. Just drag all of that onto your hard drive.

You'll notice that everything's all named funny, so all you have to do is set the option for allowing iTunes to manage your music folder to on. When you drag the music in, it'll rename everything. Tada.

I've got an issue with my desktop that I'm trying to figure out.

I was moving from my room to my former roommate's room, and of course, I lost my grip on my desktop tower, and it took a 5 or 6 inch fall. I was nervous, but I moved the computer, set it up immediately and it powered on. It ran through the BIOS screen, then it started to load Windows XP, and then my computer spontaneously restarted itself. It went back through the BIOS screen and then fully loaded Windows. This was last weekend.

Today the power went off, I rebooted my computer when the power came back on, and it then proceeds to pull the spontaneous restart about 3 times. I launched Windows XP into safe mode and I started to ask for help on here when the computer spontaneously restarted again. So I opened up the computer tower, vacuumed out the dust that had accumulated since the last time I cleaned it out, made sure all the visible connections were tight. I didn't reseat the memory, but I pressed on it and it seemed to be correctly seated.

I powered the computer back on, it loads the BIOS screen, partially loads Windows XP and restarts again. This time the computer loads Windows XP completely.

Any ideas as to what is going on?

    Well.

I was in the process of backing up all my data on to an external HD because I knew the desktop was flighty...unfortunately, the power went off this morning and now my desktop will not boot up at all.

I powered it on today, and it ran through BIOS, attempted to load Windows XP, rebooted, and at the BIOS screen it said there was an A:/ drive error. Power it off, power it on, BIOS no longer loads and gives me a Bad BIOS checksum error.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this essentially means my motherboard has crapped out, right? Also, there are issues with the monitor. When the computer would restart, the monitor would go into sleep mode, and then immediately fire back up. Now when I try to power on my desk top, the monitor stays in hibernation mode. Is this related to my suspected faulty motherboard?

This is my first post, but I know there are quite a few tech savvy people on this board and am wondering what the best way to go about partitioning my Mac hard drive would be. I want to install Windows 7 so I can run various statistical programs that aren't Mac compatible. I've done a Google search and seen the BootCamp Utility suggested, but it's a bit nerve-wracking undertaking something like this that could potentially screw up my computer if not done right. I appreciate any help and input.

You'll partition your drive with Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder).

What you do next depends on how you want to run windows.

If you want to run Windows 7 virtually from from a window inside OS X, you'll use VMWare Fusion or Parallels -- my vote is for Fusion, but I've never used Parallels.

If you want to run Windows 7 as a fully separate OS, you may as well use Boot Camp.

OK let me preface this first by saying because of the issues I have been having, I have not searched through the entire board before posting this first.

This issue I am having is my wireless signal keeps dropping every few minutes and sometimes it reconnects sometimes it doesnt. I am not sure why, I have tried changing the channel, upgrading my wireless routers firmware, releasing/renewing dchp and nothing is solving the problem. I know its just my wireless and I know its not my computer because I have one hooked in through cable and it works fine, the other two are wireless and they are both having issues. I would say I am lucky to go more then 5 minutes without losing signal. I am completely dumbfounded here and extremely frusrated with this because nothing has changed in the house within the last day or so to cause this sudden issue with the wireless.

What I am working with is a Cisco Linksys WRT54G V1 router. I am running WEP security, and yes I know WEP is old and not very secure but it is all the wireless adapter for my XBOX runs and I dont wanna spend money on a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to try before I ended neededing to buy a new router from going Office Space on this one from this frustration? Also is it possible for a router to be affected by a computer with a virus. One of my computers recently had a AV Security Enterprise virus on it but this was about 2 weeks ago. Could this be the cause of my issues??

Does anybody know about tracking devices similar to this, but with GPS capability or longer range? (trying to apply it for security of devices, not pets)
    http://www.loc8tor.com/Store/product/Loc8tor-Lite,154,110.aspx

These are nice because they use hearing aid type batteries that will last 9 months or so. But, if wanted to track something that was stolen, I'd have to be within 400 feet of it to find it.

Other ones I've seen that use GPS, have batteries that have to be recharged regularly. That would be inconvenient and also obvious if there was cord coming out the back.

My goal is to find a device of some kind that I can hide inside a laptop case, postage scale or TV and be able to track it if it's stolen. It doesn't have to have real time locate. Everything I've seen that's LoJack-esque is $1000 or more, and /or requires monthly or annual fees. I was looking for something that was less than $200.

    It's possible that I can't find such a thing because it doesn't exist . . .

The trouble is that GPS isn't enough. GPS will give the device its location, but how does it then transmit that to you over long distances?

The answer is it must have some kind of (typically cellular) transmitter to send data over the internet. Thus, it needs to be larger, it needs to consume more power, AND you have to ride off someone's wireless cell network - which, I'm afraid, they will demand that you pay them for at regular intervals.

If you find something that meets your needs, please post it because I can't imagine anyone producing such a device, in a compact size, with high quality lithium batteries for long-life, with a cellular data connection, for under $200 and without monthly/yearly fees. Also, if you find said device, you may want to avoid a company that would have such unsupportable business model...

I clearly don't have any idea how the non-GPS / non-cellular models work, which is really more of what I was looking for. On the example I posted, you can set it to "alert" mode, meaning the transmitter and receiver communicate more often if the transmitter leaves the "safe zone." But, the alert mode uses the battery up faster. These transmit about 400-600 feet. I was hoping there might be a device that, rather than transmit more often when leaving the safe zone, used more power to transmit longer distances - say, 2500 feet - when leaving the safe zone.

I had a password on my wireless internet, but had to restart the router. How do I put it back on? The network is just called Netgear right now.

Gotcha. There might be such a device, but there are FCC regulations about transmission power, plus most OTA transmissions don't have linear falloff, so a device that transmits 600 ft. needs to be much more than 4 times as powerful to transmit 2400 ft.

Not saying it doesn't exist, of course. Just saying that there are barriers to what you want to do. Most good distance tracking systems are tracked using networks of some kind, either data networks, cell networks or radio networks.

If you find something, post it up. I'd be interested.

You need the default IP of your router. If you have the documents that came with it, it'll have the default IP. If not, find the model number of your router and google for "netgear <model> default IP". Or go to Netgear's website and download the documents for your router.

Once you find it, plug your computer directly into the router and open a web browser, navigate to <a class="postlink" href="http://" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://</a><default IP>/

That'll allow you to configure your router. There will probably be an entire section devoted to wireless settings.

To add on what Binary already said, typically the default IP for netgear is 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and the typical default username/password combo is admin/password. If your entire router got reset which it sounds like it did, it seems as if you will need the default user/pass as well.

Somebody uploaded the video of me doing my first Open Mic to their Facebook but it is only viewable to their friends. Can someone point me in the direction of how to rip that video so I can upload it myself so all my friends can see? And I use Google Chrome, I saw a bunch of ways to do it using Firefox but Firefox kills my computer. Thanks in advance!

Can someone recommend a free, simple graphics editor/graphics design program for Mac? I pretty much need something like Photoshop but not anywhere near that advanced. I basically need 10% of Photoshop.

    Thanks in advance

Photoshop Elements gives you about 90% of what the average user would need out of Photoshop but at a fraction of the cost.
