God, I miss beats like this. I think this is why I hold the nineties so dear, they seem to put so much love into the producing.

I don't post much but I searched and found that Dubya was the only person to mention Dom Kennedy. I saw him last month near UNC campus and it was fucking great. Admittedly his rhymes and flow don't blow you immediately away but it does grow on you. It's the kind of underground rap I can play in social settings and have people inquire about the artist which isn't common for my circle. As for the concert, they were only serving beer but I managed to get sloppy, pull a very hot girl's number (2.5 hrs away!?), and get Dom's autograph.

Some of his best songs don't have official videos but here's one of each. These are the type to make me put the sunroof back.

A friend of mine just put me on to Chance The Rapper. Apparently he's rapped with him in ciphers in Chicago. I'm digging this shit.

Pitchfork is looking good this year in the way of hip hop. Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky are performing.

Man, I've been neglecting this thread. Lots of good albums lately.

    1) El-P - Cancer For Cure. El-P never disappoints. All of his solo albums have been dope and this one is no different. Terrific production, of course, but great rhymes too. I love that he never gives a fuck about what the trends are, he just does his thing and progresses as an artist in exactly the way he sees fit. This is definitely an El-Producto product. Really if I have to pimp this album to get you to download it, you need to step your hip hop game up. El-P albums are an event.

    2) Ab-Soul - Control System. Follows the trends exactly. Definitely has that Black Hippy feel and keeps building on what Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy Q have been doing. These guys are reminding us the West coast still exists while we sit around waiting for the Dre album to drop.

    3) Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music. El-P handles all the production on this album, and it is once again phenomenal. Killer Mike has been underrated for a long time now. If you like UGK and Three 6 Mafia, you'll love Killer Mike. Killer Mike does what he has been doing for years, but El-P tailors his trademark style to give it more southern flavor while maintaining an El-P feel. I wasn't sure how this union would work out, but after a few listens, I am blown away.

As an aside, T.I. kills his verse on the first track of this album. I had accepted that his time had passed, but this verse reminded me just how good he can be. Hopefully this means a return to form from the former king of the south. Here's the track:

Drinking on that Hennessey, blowing on that cannabis
    Amerikkka's nightmare, trap nigga fantasy
A record full of felonies, searching for a better me
But choppers go off in my hood like Iraq, Cuba, Tel Aviv

I was waiting for someone to go in on this beat. Honestly, Mac Millers is the only verse that I like but hopefully some other rappers will do their own versions.

If anyone digs the kind of underground approach these two up and comers are really sick.

    Elzhi- Elmatic

This tape is a remake of Nas's Illmatic. I know, I know, any Nas fan will take this with a grain of salt before a listen, but this mixtape is really dope. He remakes hits such as memory lane and lifes a bitch, but introduces a different sound as live instruments were used to produce the beats. I really, really like the tape and that says a lot as Nas is one of my favorite rappers of all time.

    Lacrae- church clothes

This guy has more of a southern feel. He is sort of classified as a gospel rapper, but in no way, shape or form is he your typical gospel rapper. This tape is another must listen and definitely has some bangers on it.

You can get both downloads for free on datpiff.com so if you have some extra time I definitely recommend giving them a listen.

This thread needs to be kicked into motion again...

Domo Genesis released his No Idols mixtape earlier this month.

New-ish Lupe (this song has been floating around for while) is worth a listen. I can't make up my mind as to how I actually feel about it (it probably crosses the line into patronizing and/or sanctimonious):

I know it just came out today, but has anyone had a chance to hear the slaughterhouse CD yet? I'm not as excited as I was after hearing a few of their singles. they're not exactly "single" rappers anyway so hopefully those will be the worst songs of the album.

This track from the upcoming G.O.O.D. Music album is killing it. I absolutely love the Jay-Z line "I'm talking "Bossy", I ain't talking Kelis; Your money Too $hort, you ain't talking to me."

I just gave Food and Liquor II a full listen and it's pretty great. That track is actually one
of the weakest on the album. It's definitely not on par with the first Food and Liquor, but it's good to hear Lupe doing work he's proud of again.

Kind of the same deal with the GOOD Friday album. Good, so long as you don't go in expecting Watch the Throne or Twisted Fantasy. Everything is just kind of expected. Kanye's production teeters between staggering and confusing, Jay Z murders everything he touches, and Legend writes another one that'll get you laid.

As far as i'm concerned, El-P has carried hip hop this summer. Great interview with him on Sound Opinions from a few weeks back, by the way. The guy is brilliant. Definitely worth a listen.
