I doubt the endurance is very long, but as a proof of concept it is definitely interesting. The range is probably very limited as well with all those electronics and such on it. High power electronics+radio link=yay EMI That said, they are only going to get better and smaller as time goes on...
Here's a cool tech download for people who may have multiple desktops at home. Mouse Without Borders It allows you to seamlessly use a single keyboard/mouse/monitor between multiple machines. Pretty damn slick.
So it's closed source Synnergy without Linux or OSX support? If it's smoother/less hassle to set up, I'll try it out. But a bit astonished that it's taken so long - software KVM's have been on the wish list for years, and it seems like it should be a relatively natural extension of plenty of open source products, or existing microsoft products (a second RDP servie on another port that doesn't kill console video on the server and some mouse tracking customization seems like it would do the job).
It's similar to Synnergy, however this lets you drag/drop files between computers as well which is nice. Yes, I realize you could have network shares set up and do the same thing, but hey, I'm lazy.
I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 32gb wifi tablet, so I'll post my personal thoughts for anyone in the market. My decision came down to buying either the ipad or the galaxy. I use it mostly for the internet and its PDF ebooks app, but I'll add other uses soon. First things first, it's small, and very light; smaller and lighter than the Ipad2 (my roommate has one, another has a Thrive, and the last has the Acer one). It came with a bunch of preloaded apps that I don't really use anymore, but some I do, such as the bookmark organizer. I also have an android phone, so I downloaded all the same apps, which, thanks the android marketplace, are all available. It is very customizable with different backgrounds, app/widget sizes, fonts, animations, and anything from the marketplace that allows personality. It's not as easy to use as the ipad but it gets made up for in different areas. It's also not as smooth as the ipad, but it still works nicely. I have not had the chance to put on any music or movies, but slacker radio works well with the two tablet speakers and youtube works very well and easily. Typing is a little rough as the autocorrect isn't the best, but it does have swype, which is great for short emails, messages, etc. but it takes some getting used to. Also, everything is just a little bit slower than the Ipad and stuff takes a split second longer to load. Pro's: Small, light, fast, customizable as hell, lots of usable apps, great multimedia (so far), Flash, great organization, and the battery lasts forever. Con's: Not as user friendly as it could, very slight lag in everything, and I'm not sure how the support is so far... Last things last, I bought a gumdrop.com case for it but its shipping keeps getting delayed... I would recommend it to anyone as it is very good looking and very professional looking.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the Vizio tablet? I'm shopping around and it seems to be the only one within a sub-$300 price range. I was mainly looking for an e-book reader for all of the pirated texts books and some Internet capabilities.
Kogan / Agora do some acceptable quality dirt cheap tablets. A nook color or kindle fire would also seem like solid bets for what you want. Nook is more expensive, but immediately available and already lots of people have posted articles on getting around the custom OS limitations to just run regular android. The only real big selling point for the Vizio's that I've seen in any reviews is the universal remote - but i'd probably still rather a Logitech Harmony Link with a Nook
On Kindle Fire- I am thinking of buying one purely for wifi browsing and downloading books. The problem is I currently live in the UK. Does anyone know if using purely wifi I will have any problems? Are amazon downloads restricted to US credit cards?
Anyone here tried out a Kindle Fire and have any thoughts on it as an iPad alternative (or the Nook, for that matter)?
Blackberry just announced their Mobile Fusion software. This will allow a central solution on top of BES or BES Express to allow for Android and iPhone management. Yes, I know that it can already be done through Exchange policies, but it will be nice to be able to manage BB, iOS, and Android phones under centrally managed policies. Since I do a lot of BES, iPhone, and Android management, I'm excited to see how this plays out once it's released.
I don't know if anybody ever sent you any answers, and I am not very techno savvy. But, here's my two cents since nobody else chimed in. I looked into this, checked around, talked to several "store" folks, and I bought the Nook Tablet for someone. First off, the consensus to make the decision seems to be "what is your PRIMARY reason for getting one?" In other words, if you want a reader, that has some tablet features, you'll lean towards the Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet; if you want a Tablet, the iPad is your thing. So, that said, here's an article that was updated recently that recommends the Nook Tablet and why.at CNET It doesn't seem to be advertised, but ALL B&N members, not just new members get $25 off (in store or online). So, it's only $225 right now, not $250. (I just bought it last week.) And, that's it, for using it (other than the apps). It seems like you had to keep paying a subscription fee on a regular basis for the Fire. Also, I haven't really gotten into it yet, because I wrapped the gift aready. (I did set it up and try it out. I like it - it's not as slick as the iPad, which I've used, but then it costs a lot less.) But, it is my understanding that you can run any Android app on the Nook Tablet. Shown here and here. So, that makes it a pretty competitive alternative at much less cost. imho
I have a Nook Color, the one released this time last year. I still use it almost every day and love it. I've been a pure Mac guy for over 12 years and opted to go with the Nook for a few reasons. I didn't need the bells and whistles of the iPad. As much as I love Apple, it was just too much. I can do most things on my laptop that I'd do on that thing. I love the size and weight of the Nook. Plus, the original is very easily rooted, boots from the SD card first if a bootable one is in so it's virtually un-brickable. I have this thing exactly the way I want it. XDA is a great site to learn how to do this. At the beginning, I actually took the original rooting method and wrote out how to easily root the device using a mac. I did no rooting, just wrote out the instructions in long easy form for those with no idea how to do anything command line, etc. So, I really wanted a reader device. The Nooks reader interface is amazing. Great selection of fonts, size. Very easy to navigate. Plus, it is fantastic for comics. Perfect size to hold in the hand. Also VERY VERY VERY important. The Nook and iPad handles EPUB format!!!!!!! Amazon does not. Only their MOBI format. EPUB is the standard. Every digital library and most easy free sources out there deal in EPUB. Plus, B&N gives great deals and discounts for members and has brick and mortar stores where bringing your Nook and using it in store can net you coupons and free drinks. The iPad has many great features but it's a true tablet that can be used as a reader and not a reading device with extra capabilities. The price is so much higher too. I loved the Nook being $250. The new one is the same and lighter, faster and better than the one I have and love. The whole world is up on Amazon's nuts about their device only because they are a giant power and people are mindless. It's easy enough to convert EPUB to MOBI using Calibre, but what a pain. Plus, I've heard bad things about their browser and it's even more proprietary than the Nook is. Again, I have a Nook Color for over a year now, my wife has the Nook Touch and my mom does as well and we all love them. Very well made. Last thing. The Nook has a card slot so you can put a 32GB micro SD card in. I don't think the Amazon Fire can do that, but don't quote me on that.
Yeah, and to add to this, if you are getting one for the eReader part. With the Nook Tablet, you can go to any B&N and read a book for an hour at a time for free. So, in addition to not having to pay subscription fees, depending on the convenience of your local B&N, it's a cheap (free) alternative to buying a book. Amazon and iPad can't offer that.
I ending up buying it despite being in the UK*. Due to regional restrictions I am obviously massively down on the features that I would get in the States, despite this I am loving the tablet. I just wanted something for ebooks and browser that was minimal fuss. The easy integration to the Amazon network is a big plus for me. * I used viaaddress. I was worried after reading negative reviews; however I found them great. Bought off Amazon on the Friday, reached viaaddress on the Wednesday, Fedex picked up on the Thursday, with me in the UK on Sunday.
So, jumping on this e-reader train. I'm looking into picking up an e-reader, mostly for the use of math/physics texts (mostly pdf/djvu files). Anyone have any experience with e-readers for this kind of application? Things I should look for/be aware of?
Can anyone tell me why some YouTube videos posted here won't play on my iPad but others will? Anyone else have this problem?

Plus one for this. I'm looking for a 10" screen for less than $300, ideally with the ability to check email as a backup for my laptop. Most of the ones I've found carry Android, something I know very little about. Are there Android apps that handle e-books for free, or can I expect to get bent over trying to read books on the thing?
