I'm seriously curious what politician is advocating a completely open border policy? It seems patently unreasonable, and the only way I've heard that term used is as an accusation ("My opponent wants to open a wellness spa for immigrant terrorist rapists!" kind of shit).

Also, kind of a good read on Kamala Harris:
    https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2019/05/kamala-harris-2020-campaign/586033/

I'm thinking Bernie and Joe are too old and have too much garbage out there on tape, and the race boils down to her and Beto.

Harris feels like a dramatic character: someone quite literally the polar opposite of Trump trying to capitalize on the pendulum swing back. I'm curious if anyone thinks Trump will get reelected?

Harris is a lying clown. I simply cannot fucking believe she’s a contender over far smarter and better candidates like Gabbard. If she’s a top five finisher in the primaries then there’s no hope for the DNC. A pathetic grandstander who was a shitty D.A.

Is that what she’s running on? “I was a terrible district attourney who rear-ended everyone. Elect me President!”

Once her time as a DA gets more and more attention, it will get tougher for her. At this time, she’s relatively charismatic and quite intelligent. I’m not saying she’s my choice, but I get why people like her.

Dems are looking for another Obama-type. It’s not gonna happen. They need to stop looking for a savior who says everything perfectly. Purity tests are the poison pill and our ticket to a two-term Trump presidency.

Enough with the gun control. Stop with trying to eliminate the electoral college by 2020. Fucking forget about a coherent plan for reparations right now. That needs to be studied more. Focus on the trade wars, healthcare, and winning the rust belt.

I don't think she has a chance. She's had a HUGE push from the media over the last few months and still struggles to crack into the double digits. It seems like the sjw crowd likes her and pretty much everyone else hates her.

My guess (hope) is that once the other candidates get more name recognition she becomes an after thought. She's a black candidate that is going to have a hard time with black voters bwcause of her record with the judicial system.

For the moment it's between Biden and Sanders until other candidates become better known.

Plus they'll win on climate change, immigration, the debt, and foreign policy so long as they aren't AOC level of stupid about it. It really is their election to lose so long as they play their cards at all competently.

I know we agree on very little on here but it true. Everyone is trying to get their pie in the sky policy pushed front and center. Notice how the gop stays on message pretty well. If you want to see whatever gop candidate win 44 states, have the dems run this next election on a gun ban. Instead on focusing on purely social justice policies that mean nothing to the rest of the country, focus on shit that has real meaning to the rest of the country. AOC, Tlaib, and Omar really aren’t representative of the dems as a whole. But they are letting the gop magnify them to the point where they sound really loud.

This. I follow a lot of gun websites, blogs, reddit, what have you. I'm into it both as a fun hobby and as an avid hunter. The whole community despises trump as much as they do the left. Calling him a "fake republican" and all that. There's a lot of GOP voters out there who would happily vote against Trump, unless the opponent is also against run rights and the 2A.

I think anyone on the left who makes that a primary part of their platform is just asking to lose.

The problem is AOC and her ilk have jumped on the social media bandwagon and go directly to their hardcore base when the old guard doesn't acknowledge them and their purity test. It is effective guiding the conversation but in the long term hurts the overall democratic strategy. No need for the right to magnify anything when they can get their supporters to undermine the pragmatic leaders of the party with loud shouting (see DiFi getting reamed by children about the GND). Trump is going to be Trump and tweet outrageousness regardless if any of it is actually feasible in reality, I mean most everything he's actually tried has seen him get his pee pee slapped by circuit judges and the built in separations of power. I don't know how much is purposeful just to keep the left roiled up and unable to focus on winning election strategies but they have to overcome it.

He has this inexplicable ability to make the dems come after him for stuff nobody cares about, and then plays the victim card while also whining about the dems playing the victim card. It is simultaneously the most incredible and annoying thing ever.

How exactly have you arrived at this conclusion? I come to this thread and read nothing about the Democratic party and the DNC that isn't about how they're 100% complete fuck-ups shooting themselves in the foot continuously, while the GOP gets a pass for every shitty thing they do so long as they get one thing right. So if that's the standard, that the Democrats have to be perfect while the GOP just don't have to be 100% failures, how is it the Democrats' election to lose?

If the sentiments expressed in this thread are in any way indicative of how the country as a whole feels, the Democrats have almost no chance, because no one will ever be good enough.

Correct. No one has ever critisized Trump or the republicans and the democrats, despite being near angelical beings will lose because Allah himself has deemed it.

How about you just answer the question. Why exactly do you feel it's the Democrats' election to lose when it's been established over and over [in this thread at least] that the MAGA crowd will pretty much support Trump no matter what bullshit he pulls? Especially considering the established advantage the incumbent has during re-elections already.

Well, for one because he is polling behind all over the map. Secondly, the MAGA crowd isn't anywhere near 50% of the electorate.

The established advantage of an incumbent is only true when their approval rating can at least sometimes approach that 50% mark.

Even if this is true, that just implies a more even footing, and doesn't explain how the Democrats actually have the advantage.

Sure it does. He's losing and massively unpopular with the general public.

It's not a foregone conclusion, but yeah, most of the candidates they're fielding have the advantage against Trump right now. He's polling 15 points behind against candidates like Biden, who people aren't even all that excited about.

It's pretty bad when Tucker Carlson is the only one telling the truth about Julian Assange. I couldn't find the original clip, but here's one of jimmy Dore breaking it down.

Say what you want about the guy, but what he did wasn't illegal. The fact that he got arrested should bother everybody.

Maybe it's just the make up of this board but the more conservative sites I frequent have the same standards shown at the right side of the isle. The Tea Party types demanding conservative purity, blaming middle of the roaders like Graham and McCain for all the supposed ground the right has lost by compromising. Lots of arguments the opposite way, particularly after 2012, that it'd be better to focus on being a big tent instead of being ideological purist. We won't win major national elections unless x, y, z topics are dropped as front and center talking points (see abortion and even for a while immigration).

It's the democrats to lose because outside of the historic reelection rate of incumbent presidents, the president isn't well liked nationally, burn out of Trumps antics is in their favor, and they only have to do slightly better bringing out voters on election day than 2016. They have a crowded field of candidates of which multiple could.

I think the Democrats have a recent history of shooting themselves in the foot. I was stunned that Kerry won the nomination, because he didn't seem to be different from Bush at all, and was subsequently beaten. I think just about everyone was stunned when Trump won. Even when he won the nomination, no media outlet was going to tell the emperor he had no clothes and say "we're not broadcasting this guy's nonsense, he's a troll and shouldn't be taken seriously." I think it was very clear this dude doesn't know how to govern, and the fact that we got to 2015 with him recognized as a legitimate authority on governance is a failure of the media.

That, I think, is a critical part of the issue. These people are legitimized by the media for no good reason. Trump's birtherism nonsense was a great example, or for that matter, anyone of his "policy" claims during the campaign.

People talk about AOC like she's fucking Thanos and can make shit happen. Why? She's a junior Congresswoman, that gets good play in the media, and serves as a distraction while Pelosi and Schumer actually govern. Fox News chants her name like they are villagers with pitchforks and torches, but let's be real: the GND was never feasible as legislation and yet no media outlet was going to be like "Not covering it, bro, because it's not real." I think the same thing about reparations.

It's like a guidance counselor talking to a middle schooler who says "dragon tamer" is their career plan. You have to be an adult and a professional and tell them to come up with something real enough to work towards. No one seems capable of doing that anymore.

So, at this point, Trump's main liability aside from EVERYTHING, is that he has no real platform to run on. He hasn't accomplished a Goddamned thing. His signature legislation was giving himself a tax break, that fucked over a significant number of Americans, especially among his base, and added billions to the deficit. The Senate map for Republicans isn't as friendly as 2018. The Democrats have a bigger window than normal, and right now, they just can't filter the noise well enough to find center mass.

The best thing the Democrats can do is actually stop over-reacting to Trump, take the appeal to his base seriously and start to put messaging out there that's identity neutral. "It matters more that bad shit is happening, than the skin color of who bad shit is happening to. Let's stop bad shit from happening."

That's why I don't think Trump is one of the worst presidents in American history. He has had at best moderate success on trade and been a goddamn failure at almost everything else.

Worst representative of the US ever? Sure, but he's too damn incompetent to fuck things up as much as he gets credit for. Compare that to someone like Bush jr who created disaster after disaster we are still feeling the impacts of.

I don't think we can assess the damage Trump did yet, but it's very telling that the top candidates for worst president ever are:
    Republican
    Recent

I think of the Bush years as scarred by 9/11, Katrina and the recession.

I think of the Trump years thus far as scarred by scandal after scandal, far more incompetence, race-baiting, Hurricane Maria and the inevitable economic deflation due near the end of his term.

Comparing the two, Bush is the guy who hurt his back and got hooked on opioids. Trump is the dude that decided to use heroin and double down.

Like in 15 or 20 years, I think much of this history will be written around the failings of a media ecosystem that allowed someone like Trump to flourish. Once old Rupert kicks the bucket, that countdown begins.
