I appreciate y'all keeping this going. Inside the bubble, it's been surreal. I keep wondering how any of this gets fixed....where do we go from here? The crazy, once unleashed, can't be put back away. I look at the violence, and I'm in no way surprised. It will get worse before it gets better, as the shooting in Dallas can attest. I'm more than sick of people being murdered and then a mad rush of assholes to put political spin on their deaths. The people who do this are ghouls and they should be ignored until they are silent. Silence seems to be at a premium. I know folks who were fired for voicing opinions on the Kirk shooting, and I cannot wrap my head around his posthumous treatment. Shutting the fuck up has always been an option, and it seems the voices grow more shrill, petulant and weak with each passing controversy. At this point, the first order of business seems to me to ignore Trump. Starve the narcissist. Ignore him, and let him go insane. It's been the solution to his ilk the entire time, and the powers that be just couldn't help themselves. The second is to look towards the future of our country with an eye towards rebuilding it. I have a hard time seeing a fractured political coalition re-assembling without some heavy machinations. For me, the big things are income inequality/labor rights, separation of church and state, eliminating a lot of antiquated laws leveraged for political maleficence (such as maritime laws from the 1830's that are being used to suppress rights today), and a re-envisioning of the world order where the US lives up to it's ideals and keeps its word. I don't see anyone right now capable of such a vision, much less executing it. Newsome and AOC are fine getting headlines and buzz, but like...I'm not seeing either of them heal a nation's wounds, much less extend credibility to the rural grievances that will be much worse very soon. I also think the sooner we stop pretending this is normal, and that an election in 2026 or 2028 is going to happen, the better. The great big honking meeting that DOD is hosting is to launch a "liberal" purge, and to begin McCarthyism inside the military. Bet me.

One thing I've been trying to communicate to people (and wish I could communicate to elected Dems) is the idea that we're not getting out of this without scars. If you keep looking for a path to get everything back as it was, to make everyone whole, you're going to miss the bigger picture and lose everything. It's triage time; you need to identify what can be saved, and what is unfortunately already lost, and act accordingly.

Interestingly in this case Trump was breaking the law by not banning it. Congress passed legislation that basically required TikTok to be sold to an American company, or banned, and Trump kept kicking the can down the road and declaring "extensions" of the deadline (which are provided for nowhere in law) until he could put together a cabal of right wing assholes to put together an attractive enough offer for the Chinese to take it. I believe the current terms are that the American operations of TikTok will be spun off into a company acquired by the US consortium, and the TikTok algorithm will be licensed to this new American company for their operations.
